Engine Oil - preference / use?

What engine oil / weight does everyone use?

Looking for recommendations outside the BMW spec oil changes. I'm located in the Northeast US and the X1 is mostly used by the wife for her 1.5 mile commute to work. Its a late MY2016 gasoline engine and has always been services at BMW for the past four years / 20K miles.

Alternative engine oil grades

From Manual here Uk.

If suitable engine oils are not available, up to 1 li‐ tre, 2 pints, of an engine oil with the following oil specification can be used for topping up:
Petrol engine
ACEA C2. ACEA C3.

Castrol edge 5/30 is one

Thanks, will look at it.

I'm looking at 5w30 of Motul or LiquiMolly.

My BMW Drivers Guide (UK) lists specific BMW OILS including BMW Longlife-01/04/04FE/12FE/14FE+.
Alternatively, for top-up, up to 1 litre (2 pints) ACEA A3/B4
So it may be that there are differing recommendations depending on your engine (mine is the 1.5 litre B38 petrol engine). Best to see what it states in your Owners Handbook/Drivers Guide, or ask your dealer.

I've stayed with BMW 83212365946, SAE 5W-30, Longlife 01, Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Still available from many vendors online for aprox. $9 (US) per liter. I've also been buying the oil filter complete kit from Rock Auto (Mahle OX 815/1D) aprox. $8.35. Double up on the needed quantities and you may avoid the shipping charge(s).

BMW 0W20 LL-14/17 FE+ during winter. Liqui Moly
SpecialTec 5W30 rest of the year. I got LL-17 from dealer this past winter so I'm guessing BMW recently changed the formulation and recommended oil for the X1.

I second the BMW 0w20 LL 14 for better fuel economy if it's mostly for your wife. I'd stay away from any 5w30 for the harsh winter of Northeast.

Personally I would use the Royal Purple HPS for higher performance and good engine cleaning.
