Navigation Touchpad

So I was looking at the 2020 details on BMWUSA for the X2 M35i and note that in the Premium Package (which I have) lists "The latest version of the touchpad can interpret users' intended letter/number input and will confirm with audible response".
Problem is - I just have a rotary dial with no touchpad.
For those who have an M35i w//Premium Package - what do you have?

the rotary dial is the touch pad. you can draw on it but it won't necessarily move the cursor so to speak like a PC. For example next time yo need to look up a phone number, instead of using the dial to choose letters try drawing them. Of course do all of this in a safe manner

I find that it is about 60/40 figuring out what I want, if I get frustrated I go voice for more fun and games.

I still need to figure stuff out with the car. and as always it is a blast to drive

I actually found it pretty neat and easy. The knob is so big that tracing something with my finger is actually pretty easy. Still I hardly use it... it's much easier to talk to my phone and/or just use it while it's on it's mount. Something that was neat is that if you hold the voice command for 3 seconds or something like that, it's supposed to initiate your phone's voice commands. I can't remember if I tried that at all...

I find it incredibly useful when trying to pick out music on my USB drive since with the wheel I choose search, then either albums or artists and then trace the first few letters, it's almost 100% accurate for me, the best part is that if you're looking for part of an album like Jazz Meets Cuba or the others in the series I just trace out "meets" and they all pop up.

For the phone depending on if I'm in CarPlay or not I use Hey Siri and have her call, or if I'm in BMW mode I say "call so and so on mobile" again it's almost 100%.

The hold 3 seconds of the voice button with an iphone attached and not in CarPlay will initiate a Siri prompt without having to say "hey Siri" very useful when I'm in BMW mode and want to have the house get ready for me in the dark, I press it, wait for the Siri prompt and say "I'm home" and it lights up the items in my "I'm home" activity.

I have the touchpad controller and thought I'd use it more. But given that it's on my left side (right hand drive car), and not being a southpaw, I find it very difficult to use when moving.

End up using the voice recognition for navigation, and just the scroll wheel for music selection

Sometime I reach for the touchscreen itself, for Apple carplay

You have the touchpad. It is the knob inside the arrows.

Damn it does look a little different. I think both my wife's X1 and mine are the "sharper" knobs like billnchristy. I'll check mine at the end of the day when I get off work.

@skr9 that is the non-touch version. I had that controller in my previous car. Here in Europe, X2 2020 have the 8.8" screen for navigation, and 10.5" for navigation plus. If you have 8.8" screen maybe you don't have the navigation plus? If you have the 10.5" then i suppose you should also have the touch controller so ask your dealer...

Here in the US, the touchpad should be part of the Navigation feature as part of the premium package, which is what I have in my vehicle. My dealer is not being very responsive - I may need to seek higher help on this one.

Sounds like your salesperson was paying more attention to his/her commission, rather than inspecting your car at delivery.

Please be sure update us on how BMW handles this situation. I, for one, would certainly walk away from BMW on my next purchase if they don't do you right in this situation.

Good luck!

I was reading out of curiosity retrofits, and there wasn't a clear answer. It's still obviously a BMW problem that the dealer you got it from should take up with bmw NA. Ultimately they would have to be reimbursed from BMW NA since they built the car. Someone in older 2014 posts (when touch first came out) Said some dealers quoted $700 for parts, but was not sure if coding was needed. From what I can see, the controller is one piece and around $350 (maybe more from BMW) The question is if your idrive hardware is all compatible, and they just put in the wrong knob and is missing a wire... or if you're missing a lot more hardware.

Were you not introduced to the general sales manager or general manager when you placed your order? If not, now is a good time to make their acquaintance!!

I was a repeat customer, so they really dispensed any formalities and were pretty lazy on the service side this time around. Plus the dealership is undergoing reconstruction, so its a bit of chaotic mess at the moment.

Hoping to get there this week and speak with the management and get some resolution. Will share the outcome

Did this get resolved? I think I also have the non-touchpad version, though I have the premium package. A 2020 M35i delivered December 2019.

Late to posting an update on this - but here goes...So the official word on this from BMW North America is that the touchpad is NOT included on the X2 M's - as they did away with that and the CD changer. Cost cutting I assume?

Man that's a bummer. Sounds really dumb but thankfully it's hardly a useful feature to me if it does make you feel better....
