M5, M3 Wagon???
I was just reading about an M5 wagon and wondered if BMW might make a M3 wagon. I don't think it is such a good idea for either the M5 or M3 to come in a wagon. What do yall think?
Here is the pic of the 5 wagon. |

I agree that it's stupid. You either want a performance car or a practical car. It strikes me as BMW pandering to a market segment that they think is out there, and forgetting all about their brand integrity. Same thing goes for the "M Sport" bullshit package you can add. You either have an M or you don't.

I have to disagree with you there Zep. There obviously is a market (maybe not as much is the US) or else the Mercedes E55 AMG wagon, Audi RS6 wagon, Magnum SRT-8 wagon, BMW 545 wagon, etc would not exist or succeed.
If you've ever been on the autobahn, you know the majority of fast movers are none other than wagons. They may be more practical, but that doesn't mean they are any less of a performer. If anyone, you should know that since you have one |

I love the idea of an M5 wagon, but I just can't imagine taking it to Lowe's to fill it up with bags of concrete, like I might my 323it. |

There are lots of markets where getting a 3ton 400hp truck for every day driving is considered the epitomy of stupid, yet the Porchase Cayenne S sells here...
I for one would get the M5 Touring in a heartbeat over any top-line SUV, even the x5 4.4. BMW is currently considering an M3 touring but plans have not been confirmed (got this from Autobild.de - posted her as a summary of the artlicle two days ago). I don't think that we'll get the M3 touring even if it is made. I think that they will make it if the M5 touring does well (especially in Europe where people have asked for it in the past). |

Okay, maybe stupid is a strong word... and I'm all for variety and choices. I think the 5 wagon is great (as is the 3 wagon), but if I wanted an M, I just don't think it would be in a wagon. In EU where you can drive faster maybe it makes more sense. The last thing some weathly soccer mom over here needs is 500 HP.

I hear you, but think about it, the entire M line originally was about practical supercar performance, the M3 could still seat 4, the M5 was designed (successfully) as a supercar for the familly.
Every car manufacturer is imitating this (heck MB had to go out and buy AMG to get into the action). So extending the practical supercar format to a station wagon (sorry BMW touring) is fully within the M class brand identity. I will agree that they are now extending the M branding to all their line up (one of the effects of having the ex boss of AMG in charge of M now), but still, I see nothing wrong with it applied to wagons. The Dodge SRT8 is great and I think I like the M5 touring more than any Cayenne etc. Of course it is about choice, and I will gladly race anyone in their Super SUVs once I can get my hands on enough spare cash for M5 Touring |

I think an M5 wagon is a great idea. When I went to Europe, it seemed like EVERYONE was driving station wagons. So I think an M5 wagon would sell well there. And in Canada, we're very open-minded. We like hatchbacks and wagons too.

Yes, Europeans like the idea of having a utility vehicle. However, gas is too damn expensive to be driving Expeditions and Tahoes (7 bucks/gallon when I left there). Also, there really isn't room for families to have a sports car, an SUV, and a economy-beater car. This is why there are so many more Kombis/Touring versions of cars than sedans. This also explains why hatchbacks are so much more poplular as smaller cars (VW Golf is immensely more popular than the Jetta [Bora]). This is why the demand for AMG's, RS's, and M's as touring models is so high there. In fact, I had two coworkers of mine who took took their stationwagons out every Thursday night to Hockenheimring for a couple of hot laps. One of the cars was an E55 wagon and the other was an RS6 wagon...

I lived there for a total of 16 years (on and off). In fact, I am half-German because my mother was a German citizen. Overall, the people of very nice but everything is so expensive (especially after the Euro).

What a bizarre effect tradition seems to hold here in the USA. We are caught up with old ideas about station wagons and soccer moms. IMO this is dark ages thinking, with a smidgen of sexism. Bring on the M3T if it performs as well as the M3 sedan. Personally I would prefer a 335dT, mostly for financial reasons. I like to use my car to get me, my family, and my toys to places where I can use them. Function rules, not image.

A diesel touring would certainly catch my attention. Then I would just have to convince my wife to ditch her SUV...
