What could be wrong with my dog??

My dog was walking just fine yesterday. Today, however, we noticed that it's not putting pressure on the rear right leg (kind of curled up so to speak). Sometimes when walking it would put it down and walk on all 4 legs and sometimes it would pick up that rear leg. My dad said he's seen him do that before so might may or may not have been recent.

Any thoughts as to what could be wrong with his leg? I want to get some more info. before taking him in to the vet tomorrow.

PS: he's not overweight or anything. We walk him at least once a day and he runs and plays around the yard a lot so I don't think weight is a problem.

you might want to check his paw. sometime my dog favors his leg because something is wrong with his paw.

If he's been chewing on his paw, he may have overdone it and made the skin on the meaty part (soft paw cushion) too tender. Sometimes, when my dog does that and we go out for a walk, she does exactly what you described as soon as her paws get wet (walking on grass, etc.).

If that is not the cause in your case, then I would have him checked by the vet to make sure.

You have to track down the cause. If you can't figure it out then you need to take him to a vet because you never know.

The dog I had as a kid started doing something similar later in life with his right front paw and it ended up being a cancerous growth. We took him in shortly after noticing what he was doing but by that point it was too far along and he had to be put down

It's probably something simpler in this case but you can't just assume it's nothing. You need to figure it out.

We checked his paw to see if something was stuck on there but didn't find anything. How can I tell if it's too tender or not? Sorry to hear about your dog LIB and I really hope that's not the case with mine...

Check by applying pressure on the soft "cushiony" parts of the paw and see if he reacts to it. Don't be too rough ..apply it gently and increase the pressure more and more. Normally, if there is a problem, you hear him scream and try to retract his paw. Also, if there is a cut or scab, it may not be visible to the eye. You may have to wet his paw with soapy water and see if it stings him or not. Good Luck.

Thanks guys! I went to look at him after his nap and he was up and walking around just fine. It's pretty weird. I think I'm still going to take him to the vet tomorrow just to be sure. I'd rather spend a little money now to prevent/cure whatever it is then to spend a boatload more down the road.

Is he a pure breed? Maybe his joints are getting bad...? My friend had a long hair chiuwawa (or however you spell it), and he's been limping a little bit in his rear led, and it had to do w/ his knees or something... had to get surgery too... If none of the procedures above work, going to the vet is probably your best bet.

I don't think he's a purebred. I've never noticed anything wrong until today (or maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention. I'll get him checked out either way. Hopefully no surgery is needed.
