Fail? I'm was just voicing my opinion that overclocking isn't as popular anymore and programs made today are mostly shoddy when compared to yesterday when CPU speeds were a lot slower. Programs made in the i486 days were some of the finest ever - who here remembers and agrees?

Overclocking isn't popular anymore...which is why every non-OEM board has features for CPU overclocking, voltages, and even some have features to recover from an error where it won't boot into the BIOS. Like I said before, if you *know* what you are doing, it makes perfect sense.

I remember those apps, and although they were great for their time and bring back memories, they were a) very simple and b) written by very few people. Nowadays you not only have coders but designers, artists, etc. etc. to add all the needed functionality that has come to be expected. Totally an apples to oranges comparison.

I'll agree with limecat for now...

These days, it's not popular anymore because computers are so fast and affordable. Now RAM memory prices are so out of this universe cheap too. Back then, most people couldn't wait for a faster computer even if they have to money. Things were just too slow for crappy products like Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11 and Windows 95, etc. These days, people care more about saving money and not buying than overclocking CPU's. Overclocking CPU's is like adding NOS to your car. It's so 90's.

The first thing to ask yourself is "Why do I need to overclock?". Are you running applications that are computationally intensive and have high "user time" (Unix term) demands? Will more cycles per second meet those demands? Cycles per second is certainly not the only measure of CPU performance... take for example SMT (symmetric multi-threading), out of order execution, etc.

Secondly, if you do want/need to overclock, make sure of two things:

1. You can properly cool your system.
2. Frequency = CPU Multiplier * system clock speed

without these overclocking is basically harmful/useless. It is fairly common for the uninitiated to bump CPU frequency without considering the speed of the FSB (system clock). The factory should take care of this for you I would think. Lastly, will other dedicated hardware (i.e GPU) better accomplish your goals? Myself, I would go the Occam's razor route and not add any unnecessary complexity/worries.

OC is no longer a "fun" mod, but as a computer guy, its just a plain requirement to do it.
its that easy, simple and safe.

though, I did OCed my previous geforce graphics card a bit too much I think. The fan blew up. maybe it was just the life span. i dunno.

You shouldn't ever be OC'ing on stock cooling, hell even air cooled OC is generally silly since you can't push it that much even with a huge ass heatsink. If you really want to OC liquid cooling is a necessity.

Yeah. I only OCed because I bought the graphics card used and the seller said he OCed it before with stock cooling and it was fine.

It lasted 1 1/2year before stock cooling popped, so it was good enough. Got a brand new system afterwards. Good things always happen after a bad thing.
