Carplay for 2017 ENTRYNAV F48

From what I can tell, I seem to own a car somewhere in between the "NBT" and "EVO" compatible carplay retrofits, whether it's a whole screen replacement/android box, or an MMI box that uses the existing screen.

Car info: 2017 X1, last 7 of VIN: P924685 Hifi sound, no navigation. Build date is 7/2016, sold in USA.

Am I SOL until someone makes a compatible kit, unless I do a full upgrade? What are other folks with these "in between" cars doing?

The only thing I've found online after lots of scouring is this, but haven't found any info on the unit outside of Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Wireles...QAAOSwvfRd44QA

Thanks for any help!

Try reaching out to Andream. They’ll ask for last digits of VIN. I have a 2016 X1 with a build date of 12/2015 in the US. I was able to get this kit in my car https://www.android-car-dvd.com/prod...32066140471432

Good suggestion, just did; thanks. Didn't see anything on their site for ENTRYNAV but maybe something could be adapted.

Separately, according to a rep at bimmer tech the only option so far seems to be a $3K OEM retrofit. Strange not to have found any reference to the black hole niche market for entrynav folks like me, as I sifted forum posts... Or maybe I'm misunderstanding something fundamental, like entrynav=NBT or something...

I have ENTRYNAV headunit and NBT iDrive (these were confirmed by Bimmertech as well). I almost went with them but gladly found other MMI vendors. The hardware is the same, only difference is the software.

After reaching out to a few vendors, it looks like my car can take the NBT systems, which is a relief.

But I'm seeing many mixed reviews over sound quality. Two primary questions to anyone out there with experience:

1) To avoid lower quality audio via AUX, has anyone used a retrofitted system's to use carplay for on screen waze/google maps (video/controls only), but use the OEM bluetooth for audio from an iphone? Is the OEM bluetooth audio clearer than AUX?

2) How do you know whether you your car will even REQUIRE aux connection via console - I see some people saying their audio worked without doing this (is there a range of build dates, combo of options, etc). For those lucky people/cars, is the audio connection in fact digital (via USB) or is the signal just fed through an analog aux-type connection (glorified headphone jack) pinned into the wiring harness?

These are the three variants I'm considering; experience anyone?

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001291348261.html
https://avinusa.com/10-25-multimedia...eries-f48.html

The middle option has an attractive price, but I can't find much on the seller's "brand". I suspect the actual unit is the same as nearly every other kit out there. Not sure how useful the replacement idrive controller would be..

I'll preface this with I don't have experience with any of those systems, but that I've been researching this extensively over a few months and what I understand is stay away from the Chinese stuff and Avin USA (which isn't really a US company, they're operating under a fake US address), the hardware is good but the software is glitchy and support + updates are nonexistent. Look into the solution ventjock provided or if you want an aftermarket system 4x4shop who will provide full warranty, support, updates, someone will even videochat with you throughout the entire install to ensure you're all setup and everything is working. Bimmertech also has decent equipment and ok support but is very expensive.

Point is. Don't just focus on the hardware, integration, software, stability all matter too.

Good points, I've been thinking more and more about glitches. My original reason for buying an X1 with warranties, maintenance packages etc is for it to be as problem free as possible; juggling too many other things in life these days.

Have been becoming curious about swapping in an EVO HU. Realizing this will take upfront work, but it'll be one and done, (hopefully) glitch free once it's installed. However, the upfront work seems pretty laborious.

Anyone know if an upgrade to just the HU is possible
, without swapping screens and idrive controller? I believe the parameters are that I need to buy a HU that's older than mine, then find help in coding it; unless coding is pretty straight forward (I do have a USB OBD2 cable and can do basic things).

Yes you can swap the headunit and keep your screen and idrive controller. It will need to be coded your car. I believe you will lose BMW Apps services, which is the only reason I haven't considered this route. The car has BMW services until 2034 and my wife and I use it quite often for sending navigation addresses to the car, to ask Alexa to vent the car if we're heading out with the baby, and the concierge services have been useful on multiple occasions.

That is only the licence time! You will still have to pay for it periodically, and that is country dependant.

Can you elaborate? It's a new used vehicle I have, only owned a month. 2017 X1 Msport, purchased privately and no remaining warranty. But when I login to the connected portal it says :

Connected Drive Services Professional
This service has been subscribed to your BMW "xxxxxx" until 19.08.2034.
It can be extended once you are within 3 months of service expiration.

MyCar Remote Services
This service has been subscribed to your BMW "xxxxxx" until 19.08.2032.
It can be extended once you are within 3 months of service expiration.

We did also get an email from SiriusXM that we have been subscribed to a 1 year trial.

Wow, you really lucked out. Maybe the previous owner bought/extended the services for a long period.

I have a 2018 X1 and the 3-year warranty expires in December 2020 (car was first registered in December 2017). My Connected Drive Services Professional service expires at the same time.

Yes. As you will know, this is for the service provided by BMW in NA. Not quite the same as the licence. For users in all places in the world, it is best to speak to BMW Head Office to find out your procedures and set up. In the UK we login into the Portal and pay for what we want for periods of time.

I am in Canada and I think the warranty/services may be different in the U.S. In Canada, I also can log into a portal to review existing services/purchase additional services, but not extend warranties.

I am sure in the majority of places in the world you have to go through a different procedure to extend warranties. You do in the UK. The Portal only gives the owner the options to purchase services as shown in my screen dumps.
Note 1. The licences discussed previously are similar to software licences and have nothing to do with the services.
Note 2. Not all shown are available for UK X1's. It depends on the vehicles the owner has registered in the Portal.

First,, thanks for confirming that we're prepaid for a good while. I first noticed the real time traffic was working, then tried the bmw connected app which was functional. Eventually I found the online portal. We decided we're not going to mention it, just be happy we have these extra services.

Our Canada portal looks the same as the above, but the BMW Excellence package isn't available here. Wish it was, I want online voice processing.

Today, the Canadian portal shows the option to extend my Connected Package Professional for at $200 CAD for 12 months. This is right on time 3 months before my existing service expires in December. I'll just wait until November before renewing.

The Connected Package Professional does include Online Speech Processing.

I am not interested in extended warranties. The dealer had offered a whole bunch of extras, but I declined them all.

That's interesting. It's not available for me. "This package is not available for your vehicle"

I can only imagine this is either because:
1) I already have the other subscriptions and there is overlap.
2) My early build 2017 has EntryNav (8.8" non touch, no CarPlay), where your 2018 is likely EntryNav2 which I believe has slightly more powerful hardware to support those additional services.

The one thing I wish this car had was the newer EntryNav2, but buying used there is give and take.

I'd probably be okay with loosing connected drive; my 7/2016 '17 build must have missed the evo nav by days and there are few worthwhile features available on the entrynav unit.

Re the EVO swap/update; does the age/build of the EVO unit matter? I read somewhere there may be coding implications but don't know if it was reliable info or any specifics...
