It's not replacing the F31, it's replacing the E84. BMW USA is to blame for the F31 being a dud. No rwd option, no manual option, no six cylinder option. All things the ROW gets.

I'd also assume that the F48 will be 200-500 pounds lighter than the porky E84.
The answer I had from bmw for not brigning the G21 to north american market is that the X1 And X3 are going to be so good that a 3 Touring won't be necessary. As for now I don't consider this X1 to be that good so the next X3 better be damn good.

Agreed. If the F31 had a 335 option with M Sport I would be at the dealer tomorrow.
Go to a dealer in the UK, Germany or Mexico. 😜

That's fair, we didn't consider the F31 to be that good, so got the E84 with the N55 instead. I just can't see the G chassis being anything good, with the recent trend BMW has been on.

Well you have alot of hp for the money with the E84 with a nice steering feel. On the other hand you have the old 6spd, terrible plastics quality in the interior, no back seat leg room and not alot of cargo room. So it all depend of your priority.

Yeah, and the 6s is just as quick as the 8s when paired with the N55. It's also not like BMW went all high class on plastics with the F cars either.

But yeah, my 6'2" frame a rear facing kid seat, or 5'9" mom sure find the back small. Oh, wait, no they don't.

But in fairness, the F48 looks to have more room back there, probably on par with the F31, but still less than the F34.

all of which goes out the window because it is NOT a performance car. If you are looking at this as a performance minded vehicle I don't know what to say.

There are good ways of doing fwd based awd, like the new Focus RS or the STi, but most Haldex based cars are rather lackluster to drive. It appears that BMW is using their own system, which bodes well, but as noted, proportions and simple stuff like caliper placement don't seem promising from a driving dynamics standpoint. But I'll wait to see some reviews on this longitudinal motored, fwd based, kinda awd thing.

I like the exterior, but the shifter and center bottom dash is ugly. The shifter is too tall and looks like a manual.

This one, or the E84? I haven't tracked our E84, but did track my M Coupe and 135i plenty and have explored the limits of the E84's handling plenty. A rainy or snowy day make it plenty easy, and a quiet entrance ramp makes it possible in the dry too.

Cars are supposed to be fun. Mini's are fun too, and yes, I have tracked an R50. This could still be fun, whether on the track or just a little light hooning. Or it could suck. The 2AT seems to point towards suck, but the F56 and F55 are still quite fun. So here's hoping it's fun.

It's a little childish, but I rag on rental cars, my dad's MB's, even their old Jeeps and a manual Trooper. Not knowing how cars deal with the limit of their abilities just seems silly.

Given the GLA45 and (non US) RS Q3, this seems like a given.

Now just waiting on a true BMW X4M!

Not sure if BMW is targeting North America as a primary market. Perhaps North America may be a secondary market. The X1 is has been huge success their primary market Europe and will even attract countless number of brand conscience consumers in China. With that being said the new X1 will attract more than its fair share of consumers, including my wife, shopping for a CUV.

Just had a quick look at the specs, X1 xDrive20i is 5kg lighter than an F31 20i, and the X1 sDrive20i is 55kg lighter... I wouldn't say it's a heavy SUV.
