The 40-something single women who drive a 535? Pretty sure the majority of them don't care.

How do you believe BMW can compete with Audi, Cadillac and Lexus on the premium market without a larger parent company like those brands have to help back R&D? Every year there is something offered looking to bridge the gap and knock BMW from its position.

I have to say I'm loving this X1 in XLine form. That first picture is freaking amazing.

Well, i've had the E84 X20da the last 16 months.
And i've driven various BMW the past 20 years.
The E84 is the worst and cheapest BMW i've ever owned, i really dislike it.
Very tight interiour, cheap plastic inside and overall just an old E90.
This new model is just so much better looking, and having driven the 2AT abit, the quality of the interiour is also much much better.
This new X1 will do good for sure.
But where is the 7 year cycle, is this coming i. 09.15 as a 16' model then?

Way tougher looking especially in Alpine White, the X1 M Sport looks super cool. Anything is better then the outgoing POS. Better designed, better looking and I hope it is better made. It needs to be offered in xDrive only! A definite improvement.

Now just waiting on a true BMW X4M!

The "28i" engine moniker no longer means what it meant (even though it was never a good fit) because it's a downsize. The japanese transmission - again, yes it's an 8-speed so salesmen in the showroom can still tell the customer they are getting an 8-speed just like in an X5.
Everything here screams "parts bin", BMW shopped around to find replacement parts with the same numerical qualities as on the larger models -- except for cheap.

What we have here then is really a KIA.

This is exactly what Kia has been doing against BMW for years. Not saying they are bad cars because they are actually very good. But they are copies of BMW's --- and that's what happened here: BMW COPIED ITSELF.
The Active Tourer and Gran Tourer offer similar ambience that is featured on the X1 which is typical of BMW adapting to the market. The thinner seat backs increase passenger room especially in the rear a feature many Active Tourer customers are very happy in regards to fulfilling flexibility needs.

Ok, so three things are driving me nuts about this new model:

1. Why didn't they use the same HVAC unit they have been installing in the 2,3, and 4 series? Why have it be different?
2. The steering wheel looks like the one found on the Z4, and its not good. Why not use the wheels from the other X models? (MSport fixes this)
3. This might be because front-drive roots, but why does the steering wheel look like it isn't even facing the driver? It looks like its point up and slightly to the side. Hate this.

and while I'm at it, the shifter is so out of character with other BMWs, and just makes it seem like the oddball child of the family (which it is considering its one of the few fwd based vehicles). MSport helps a tad being that the shifter is lowered, but it is still ridiculously tall, and not like all other BMWs

Looks really good. A marked improvement than the current gen. Anyone know if this will be available in FWD form?

no more ZF8-speed Auto?

•8 Speed Steptronic Automatic Transmission (Aisin)

When does it start production? @ Spartanburg?

First production year of the B46 engine?

It's a transverse motor, so the ZF won't work, it's almost certainly built where the 2AT is built and no, you can't have a transverse I6, that's Volvo territory.

I cant believe how you guys can say the ZF 8-Speed is better than the Aisin 8-Speed without driving the car once. Wait for the reviews or take a test drive and then draw conclusions. Until then no one can say which transmission is better.

On another note, IMO the engine downgrade is indeed a bummer. Cant believe they did that. They should have tuned the engine to have the same power at least, if the N20 can do it i dont see why the new B48 can't. No bueno!
They should offer more engine options, at least a tuned B48 since they can't fit an I-6 in there. (Maybe they could fit an I-6 but given the market this car is targeted to, i dont think they will put the resources to make it happen which is fine)

Design wise, i prefer the new X1 exterior and interior over the old one EXCEPT for the shifter. That thing looks cheap compared to what we are used to see after all these years in BMWs.

I think they downgraded the HP so this doesnt eat up GT, X3/4 sales.

Most buyers wouldnt know that the HP is downgraded from prev gen.

This link to BMW's German website has a link to a new X1 video, click on "Film ansehen." You can also download the German pricelist, which won't apply to US obviously (pricing and equipment will vary), but does have some additional photos I hadn't seen before. Click on "Alle Fakten," then "Preisliste."

http://www.bmw.de/de/neufahrzeuge/x/...nen-blick.html

Edit: clicking through the different links from here, there are also a lot of new photos (including one of the beige interior, which looks great!)

Edit 2: I don't have time to go thru or compare them in detail right now, but bmw.com (not bmwusa.com) has a lot of this information too, and in English.

Absolutely love it, looks like BMW is phasing out the ugly hood shut line across all its models.

I don't think that's it. Rather, I believe BMW is going through a transitional phase with their engines, and the higher output I4s simply aren't ready yet. SCOTT suggests a hotter B48 is coming:

"Since the two new Xs use transverse engines, there will be no traditional in-line six cylinders, although sources also say BMW is developing a powerful new direct-injection 2.0-liter turbo four producing around 300 hp, part of its new B48 engine family."

http://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=962530

I suspect that, as the I6 offerings move to the B58 and transition to the 40i moniker, the 35i badge will be handed over for use on future ~300hp I4 models. So a new X1 35i is still a safe bet, perhaps for the LCI, or perhaps even sooner.

The new X1 will not receive the proper M Division treatment but an M Performance variant or iS is being discussed but it will be a four cylinder model and only with xDrive.
They have started preliminary development at Garching on the next generation X3 and X4 which for the first time we will see an X3 M and X4 M as well as two M Performance models offering petrol and diesel Options to their respective markets.

Looks like a X4 M is in my sight now... Thanks Scott for the info, now I can start planning for my next project. Will be adding an I3 with an X4 M in the stable over the next couple of years...

Do we know where it will be built? Just curious because we would like to do ED for one. The new X1 looks great! The shifter is a bit weird but I can get used to it.

It'll be built in Leipzig and will be ED-able.
