Active Guard

Can someone explain what Active Guard actually is?

According to the brochure it comes as standard, I've asked the Genius guys, but all I have had is a very basic explanation that say's I get active guard.

Is it like the Volvo city brake system?, will the car self brake at slow speeds to avoid a collision? any info appreciated.

An intelligent safety system that reduces the likelihood of front end collisions.

A camera, housed within the rear-view mirror, constantly monitors the area ahead of the vehicle. The onboard systems automatically react to any potential hazards to reduce the speed of travel and warn the driver through a combination of visual and acoustic displays.
Long story short, it is exactly what you think it is!! Active Guard is BMW's name for autonomous emergency braking or AEB, as insurance companies call it. As you said it yourself, it's standard on all trims.

Not that the standard Active Guard does not provide any warnings until the very last second before automatic intervention is needed. Driving Assist/Driving Assist Plus packages add visual and audible early warnings to that (amongst other things that are irrelevant to your question). The warnings are customisable via iDrive and you can set the distance you want them to be activated. They also add brake preconditioning (increased the pedal pressure).

Thanks for that, KPD, due to mobility problems I have a little bit of trouble reversing, especially into my driveway. Although I have never actually hit my garden wall I know I have come close on a number of occasions, so between this and PDC things should be a lot easier.

I just noticed you have the 20i, what is your economy like?

I don't think it works in reverse as it uses the camera at the front of the car to monitor distance to objects...

As The Beast said, autonomous braking does not work in reverse. Camera is a must have in my opinion.

RE fuel economy, I'm getting around 30~32 to 35 MPG combined, depending on the motorway/city ratio. I work from home and don't have a standard commute like most people. So the numbers change from time to time. Best I've achieved on the motorway was 42 (no traffic, Eco-Pro mode). Worst so far, 22mpg (lots of short trips around town).

Ah well, I'll just have to keep avoiding the wall.

I'm happy with those figures, I work from home as well so it's generally a short trip most days. The longer trips to Scotland and Europe should be OK as well.

Not standard on any trims here in Canada. An option for sure.

Are you absolutely sure? AFAIK, the AEB itself is standard. It's the collision warning that you will have to pay extra for. The wording of it in brochures and on their websites is as confusing as always. Best way to make sure is to check the list of standard and optional features.

It's already a mandatory safety feature in HGVs in Europe and will gradually become mandatory for regular cars in a couple of years anyway (2022 in the US for example). I find it very strange if the Canadian models don't have it as standard. Even cheap Korean cars have it these days.
