Home Weather Stations

Ok, I know some of you folks have home weather stations set up already. I'm looking for recommendations. I know my wind speed and direction data will be trash because my house is surrounded by trees, but everything else should be accurate. I'm looking for something with wifi capabilities to mount on my shed out in the yard. I have power in the shed, so an AC system is doable. I'm mainly looking for some setup that does not require a monthly (or yearly) subscription and operates on a wifi connection.

I use a Davis Vantage Vue. It’s wireless to the display console, but not Wi-Fi.

I own a Davis VP2. I also own ~750 stock shares of another company that I won't name, that makes personal weather stations targeting the home market and gives a 15% discount to shareholders.

I'm putting together the stuff to build a second Davis VP2 for installation at our South Carolina tree farm. (I'm also keeping an eye on the used/surplus professional equipment market, with a hope of scoring a professional-grade weather station for home and relocating the prosumer Davis VP2 down to SC.)

With that said, I plead the fifth.....

I have the AcuRite 06058M wireless weather station (not WiFi) and it works well.

This newer version has WiFi:

I have a Weatherflow Tempest..

https://weatherflow.com/tempest-weather-system/

It's been up for just over 2 years. In that time, I've had to reboot it twice (simply power-cycle it) because the wind sensor quit. Other than that - 100% reliable. Here's current data..

https://tempestwx.com/station/18897/grid

Also integrated with Weather Underground - eazy-peazy setup:

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/KAZHEREF93

And WindAlert:

https://windalert.com/spot/199203

Also.. connection to base station is wireless with outstanding range, then the base station communications via WiFi to the home network. Unit itself is 100% solar powered.

I hear that there's also a great station driver to import its readings into WeeWX.....

Thanks. Just ordered one. Solar powered is good and they have a $40 off sale now, so it was $289. No tax, either.

I can see why vreihen16 needs to monitor SC remotely, but what are the rest of yall doing?

I have a little LaCrosse that has temp/humidity outside. Change a battery about every 8-10 months. Then the base station in my room is in the wall, and has both internal and external displays, with a weather prediction based on the Hg data I entered.

But I don't Wi-Fi connect is so I can see remotely

It's a hobby. A very popular one.

Take a look at my current data...

https://tempestwx.com/station/18897/grid

Then, click on some of the individual readings, like wind speed. You get a chart showing speeds and peak gusts, going back hourly. All the data since the station was put up over 2 years ago is there. Same for temperature, rainfall, lightning strikes, etc. And I never have to lift a finger, ever - other than 2 reboots in 2 years.

Weatherflow also collects data from these stations and other NWS sources to create a micro-forecast for my specific location. It's consistently 2-3 degrees below the NWS forecast for my (tiny but spread out) home town, and is consistently more accurate. 2 weeks ago it predicted rain 2 days in advance on a day that NWS had the chance of rain at zero at that point. Rain it did.

At the bottom of the screen is a map. Click on it and you'll see all the other Weatherflow stations in my area. You can click on any of those and see their data (unless someone has chosen not to display it publicly, which is an option but everyone seems to share). Cool stuff.

I'm looking forward to getting into this. Yet another rabbit hole, probably, but I'm retired, so I have the time. The only data which won't be very accurate for me will be wind speed. Sure, it'll be accurate for my yard, but I'm surrounded by tall trees, so it won't be a very good indicator of actual windspeed out in the open. But that's fine, there are plenty of other stations around here to get that data from. One of my neighbors, who I don't know personally, has a nice weather station way up on his roof and he's above the treeline already, so he should be getting accurate wind data. Hopefully he shares his data.

I've got an Ambient Weather WS-2902C WiFi station. Don't know how it compares to other stuff, but it does everything I'm looking for

Pretty good chance he shares it on Weather Underground. Check there for stations in your area and you may find it. Or ask him if/how he shares.

This looks really cool. How does that tree affect the wind? I am investigating adding one it is a lot less expensive than I thought. Good Luck keep us posted.

My house (and the whole neighborhood) is surrounded by high trees, so there's no getting away from that. I knew going in that the wind data would be local only. This is no surprise as we've often gone out for walks and thought the wind wasn't bad and then once we leave the neighborhood and get out in the open there is suddenly strong wind. But the rest of the data is surprisingly accurate when compared to the local NWS stations. I haven't seen any rain yet, but I'm waiting for that to see how good the haptic rain gauge is.

That's temporary until my OEM mount gets here. That's from a floor lamp I used to have in my office years ago when I was toiling away. The base broke and I trashed the rest of the lamp, but I kept the sectional pole because it looked like it might come in handy some day, and sure enough...

The OEM mount from Weatherflow is much nicer looking and sturdier.
