Nice, thabks for the update! Are coding fixes something most BMW mechanic shops can tackle? My 2016 X1 is having the same symptoms on the morning start and want to get it taken care of. About how much did they charge if you don't mind me asking?

This was handled under warranty for free at a BMW dealer, so unfortunately I don't know the cost or whether an independent BMW shop can do it. :/

UPDATE:

I dug up my invoice and this is what it said, in case that's helpful:

🤷 I suppose a weak battery might be a factor....but I'd be surprised, given today's technology of coil based ignition.

Our X1 we had bought used but found out it still had warranty on it. Took it to the local dealership... they reprogramed the engine DME besides the other issues.. has been fine since.

Same issue on our recently purchased 2018 X1. It’s covered in the service bulletin B12 21 17. Just got it back today after reprogram and no longer have the issue. We also had the tank vent valve replaced too.

My 2017 X1 xDrive28i has the same problem. It stalled when backing up. I have to restart engine. I visited dealership twice and they replaced spark plug, battery. However, the problem is still there.

Same issue here. After cold start and waiting 30-60 sec, put it in reverse, engine switches off when I release my foot from the brake.

Remedies tried: longer warm-up, updated DME, new battery. No obvious faults detected.

BMW has a service bulletin on this issue. Eventually a code will be thrown for the ignition timing adjustment in idle too early after cold start. Dealer has software to fix, at least my local dealer did.
