M Performance Differential - Pricing at Last
We finally have a part number (33107555610) from BMW to order for our car. Looks like ECS has a great price on it too.

That's doable especially if you can get it port installed without paying for labor at that price. Much easier to swallow than the 3600 price tag we thought it will cost

It's covered under BMW 4 year / 50K mileage warranty so you are good for at least that period. My guess, differential oil changes would be covered under normal maintenance cycles as well. I put a call out to my dealer to see what installed price they can work up for me. Would like keep the original pumpkin and put it back on after the lease ends. Maybe get 1/2 my money back on re-sale in a couple years.

Right but I don't see large resale value for a part that may have three to four good years of life before needing to be rebuilt. I imagine someone looking aftermarket for a diff is going to want something just rebuilt with the ratio they want or very low miles. It would be more cost effective for them to buy a quaife new than pay what one might ask for this used looking to get something back for it.
You pay about 3k after installation and get maybe 500 back? Curious... |

What type of diff requires being rebuilt? My M Coupe LSD needed a fluid change every 60k miles, but that was it. I can't imagine this would be different.

It is a clutch-type LSD. So much like the transmission clutch, the clutch disks will wear with time requiring servicing at some point. Intervals will all depend on usage..

It allows you to put all the power of your car down to pavement. It insures that both rear wheels are getting the power down. There is reason all m cars come with them. They used to be part of the cold weather package. But in 1994 they decided to limit them to m cars only. Any true sports car should have one.

An LSD only lets the wheels spin at different speeds by a certain (limited) amount. Usually a percentage like 30%. at which point the diff locks and the wheels both get driven. This is in contrast to locked diffs ok off road trucks which supply equal torque and rotational speed to both rear (and likely front) wheels at the same time. Of all calls had locked diffs you couldn't turn on a road. Now to be fair out cars already have a pseudo e-diff. (Actually the sales specs on mine called it an electromechanical limited slip differential which is a bit disingenuous) If the car senses slip on a wheel it will selectively apply brakes to that wheel to attempt to send torque to the other wheel by adding resistance. The problem is this system doesn't work all that well and is slow. A LSD will help you a lot of the race track, drag racing, and snow driving. Basically anything where you are at the lot of your handling and want that 10% more. |

If you're not pushing the car in the snow and are driving in "get home safely and don't hit anything" mode, will the LSD be of any benefit?

If you are going to have this kind of car and drive it year round in Boston, or like I do here in Indy, you need snow tires.

One other thing to keep in mind, winter does not equal winter everyplace. I split my time between Chicago and the East Coast. Chicago is 100x easier to drive in because it's flat compared to NY / PA. You could get away with all seasons in Chicago no doubt, but I wouldn't for the aforementioned reasons. |
