BMW Recall - BDC Update?

I got my car to the dealer for scheduled service. They told me there is a recall to update a software. When they said that on the phone to confirm the appointment, I looked for recalls on bmw.ca & .com websites with my VIN and nothing showed up.

On the invoice, there is a bit more details:
RECALL 34 81 20
F39 F48 Program control units (BDC)
Local campaign number:
34 81 20
I googled and found nothing. Anyone knows what is it about?

Also, I knew that all my changes with Bimmercode will be gone because it was with the codes. But all my preset buttons and radio stations are gone too, plus some other settings. I thought that it should keep these settings separately when flashing the firmware. Not a big deal tho.

I’ve been reading over on the x1 forums that the dme is getting locked too. I think this has to do with the tuner I talked to saying that they were told to stop tuning b48 due to engine problems

If you have this done, can you still use BimmerCode?

That's what I am wondering too. I am going to trying today to put back some of my changes like the seatbelt reminder set for 90 sec. So annoying that long.

Hit the brakes.. yes the latest update to software is locking the DME which disables any flash modification.. not sure how this may or may not affect regular Bimmercode, I am under the impression that this is not included. Although it may be unlikely that you have plans nor is there that many tuners out there for the b48, but I think this is that one extra step of overreach where they are making life difficult again.

I did get a specific card stating the latest updates did include a security update which is indeed that locking. I am skipping both because it doesn't help me at all.

I just put back all my changes with Bimmercode. I have a longer list than I thought.
It worked well. Bimmercode menus are the same as I recalled. I even went in Expert mode and it worked fine too. i.e. enable rear foglights and 5 blinks for the turn signal.

I don't plan to flash the ECU to tune up the motor, so I am good with this update I guess.

Shouldn't do a thing since JB4 is a piggyback.

A true recall is different from a campaign, which this appears to be. Recalls are something that governments mandate, generally to address safety or critical regulated issues. Service campaigns are purely from the manufacturer, and are about quality, customer experience, internal serviceability issues, that kind of thing. They're often regional. You won't find them on the government recall lists.

They're both the owner's choice whether to apply.

Piggy back still reads values and adjusts accordingly.

Thanks for the clarifications. I understand better now the differences.
I believe that the BMW advisor used the word "recall" and they put that on the invoices too confused me.

Anyway, it was done even if they are not really able to tell me what was exactly about. Also, the advisor looked at me kind of seek for my approval but didn't ask specifically for approval. He talked more about it could take longer to do the update. And me, as newbie, I just accepted them to do it.

I was with BMW OF NORTH AMERICA LLC. 20 years as a field rep.
Here’s (in general) the way I saw these things work. Not saying that this is the right way, but it is the way it is usually handled in dealer land.

If it’s a recall you’ll get a letter and you’ll be told to bring the car in. It’s when the government and Bmw determines that it would be a safety or an operational defect. And must be corrected.

A TSB, or technical service bulletin (campaign) is a little bit more hazy. If it’s a campaign, you will usually not be contacted at home by the dealer. If it’s something that is to correct in a problem like a squeaky wiper blade or a noisy window lift motor, some will only do it if you complain. Some service advisors will ask you if you’re having that problem. Other TSB‘s that are completely transparent to you are usually done because the dealer can make a little bit of money on warranty doing it. If it’s going to change the actual operation of the car, they usually seek your approval and or they notify you at the time you bring it in, they are asking for your opinion. TSB‘s are far more murky as to how they get done than a recall, And not every dealership handles them the same way.

If the car is being traded in and is going to be certified and has warranty left on the car, they do all the TSB’s on the car.

An easy way to cut through the clutter of all this is when you take your car in and sit down with the service advisor, you can ask if there are any available technical campaigns on your car. They are usually listed in his computer screen in the R.O generator program, under your record/VIN.. You and him can then decide what you want to do. I just had this happen on a Honda, the screenshot for updates showed 4 that could be done, I only wanted 2 of them done.

so my car will not visit the dealership unless it absolutely has to for warranty work (which is likely with a bmw), so if/when i have to take the vehicle in, will they honor my request to not flash the vehicle or are they under some sort of liability something or another to flash the vehicle for legal reasons?

Performed the DME update on my X1. Disappointing. They locked the DME overriding the start stop that I had disable via coding. Now I can't code it disabled using my Carly app. No benefit to the upgrade that I am aware of.
