Fiberglass pre filter?
I took the air box off the m35i to take a look and there doesn’t seem to be any restrictions except the stock filter has a fiberglass sheet attached to it for what I assume is a pre filter of sorts.
I can’t imagine it being good for air flow but I imagine it’s there for a reason. Any thoughts? |

I remember some models of BMW had a charcol pre filter that most people ditched.. it might have been on the 550i or something. I think it's for fine particle filtering. Although my n54 and my brother's n55 motor did not have it. Honestly haven't touched the wife's X1 since it's under free service so I have no idea what's in there.. I'd love to hear the answer too.

This thing is tacked onto the paper element and is white. I've never seen another car air filter like it. There was also no debris in the airbox so it probably serves no purpose other than air restriction.
It's the white version of the cheapo blue stuff that crappy house filters use. |

Gotcha.. so I'm assuming a replacement high flow filter probably won't have it tacked onto it... never seen them on K&N's etc. Are you going to change it out, or even.. go with some cone filter? I've always loved the extra "sounds" but at the same time going for high HP numbers. I have a feeling I might try to keep this more or less stock until others get their hands on it and see how much more tuning they can get out of it.

I kinda want more noise because with the windows down you can hear the turbo spool up but not inside

Let us know when you swap. I saw that burger tuning has one for the cars, not specifically for ours, but I'm certain it would work. I think someone had an intake on his X2 28i but then reverted back after not long.

Yeah, I'm not sure if it's for me either. And I wrote Burger and they weren't sure if it would work either.

Ok, so I took it off and snapped some pics so you guys can see what's going on here.
I bit the bullet and took the filter off and I can tell you that it is a HUGE air restriction. I did a little unscientific test where I blew on a piece of paper and then put the filter in front and did again, couldnt even get it to move. I figure if anything weird goes on I can just glue it back on like they did! Anyone know what that round thing is on the filter box? They don't even show it on Realoem. |

And, even though Mann is on the filter they don't claim to make it!
Mann USA has no m35i Mann Europe has this: |

No noticeable difference really. I think as time goes on, those with it will start seeing loss of flow. My AC guy said the fiberglass filters get so bad that they cause lots of problems with hvac if people don’t change regularly.

I was browsing burger tuning the other day for someone else's car and saw that the X1 transverse? Engine had an intake.. it basically said intake on the right side of the engine (which matches ours). It just seems like one open filter with an aluminum block to bolt on. Nice and simple.. except like $175. I might just stick with a higher flow filter in the future. I'm still around 2500 miles so I am not really going to touch anything for as long as I can bring myself to.. haha.

Just to add to this thread on the intake section.. I was doing some work and had all cars at home so I popped the hoods on the X1 and the X2. The actual MAF plug is certainly different and I understand the "oval" MAF statement. The X1 uses a very large fat hole with a rubber gasket. I think of it as the size of my thumb. The X2 has a small rectangle opening that basically just has the size of the MAF chip to slide into the intake. There is no gasket at all. The screw holes would not match up nor would the opening. I'm thinking of options in the mean time just to see if things would change a little, and if I can get some dyno time it'll be fun

That's an anti-restriction valve, what Volvo calls the "snow valve". If enough debris gets sucked in (e.g. snow) the air filter will temporarily clog. This valve gets sucked open and allows the engine to keep running, at least enough to get to safety.

I was looking more for an open air cone filter for more sound as well I didn't measure exactly but I would think the X1 air filter would fit in the X2 box and according to the description on the amazon link it is. Everything is VERY similar.. in fact, if there was an adapter available to convert from the oval MAF opening to the slot style it would work. I'm investigating options, but most are starting to get pricey for me to try for fun.. we'll see.

surely it's going to be near impossible to squeeze even one more kW out of the M35 engine with any intake or exhaust mods
I mean, 225kW from a 2 litre turbo is surely stretching the engine already

Yeah at 22.8psi I'm sure it can handle a little more boost forgetting about timing etc. I just pieced together something for a "cold air" intake/open filament if it works I'll let you guys know, and I'll get some dyno time. Forget the naysayers about the hot air from the engine bay.. if the car is moving the air is also moving, plenty of other dyno results even if it gains little, it doesn't lose much unless you're stuck in traffic. Still I want to see if it sounds better, as I love the turbo sounds!
