Replacing brake pads on leased vehicles.
Happy New Year,
Been a while since I posted on here. Nice to be back. Question. My 2018 is reporting that I need to replace the brakes rear and front. I haven't checked with BMW, but imagine this is going to be pricey. I am leasing the BMW, and the lease ends in 2021. It seems odd that the brakes are already going. It's not like I am driving the car hard. Just normal city driving. Anyhow, do I need to use BMW OEM brakes serviced by BMW, or can I just go to any mechanic that I trust to get my brakes done (and save $)? Will this affect the lease? Derek |

Regards to your premature wear comment, I had to replace my rear pads at only 25k on my 2018 XDrive. The car was usually driven very conservatively and rarely with any hard braking. The fronts still have several mm left that should last me another 15 to 20k miles. Generally, front pads should wear much sooner than rear pads, not the other way around.
I believe (and this is a lot of speculation) the rear pad material composition was not designed well for use on a SAV/AWD drivetrain. When I DIY'd the rear brake job, there was a recent part update to the pads, which I assume was to upgrade to a more durable option. In terms of where to get it serviced, I cant offer much advice as I financed my car and DIY'd the repair myself. The best way to definitively answer your question would likely be in your leasing paperwork, which should have terms around servicing, if any exist. I wouldn't want to lead you astray on this issue and possibly create problems for you down the road. |

Double check that your warning isn't by mileage (time) or the actual wear sensor on the pads. The cost of other brake pads that are/may be better is not a whole lot different so go with whatever makes you comfortable, they will not ever check the type of brake pad you put in when you return the lease. We have been lucky with my wife's '16 which is coming up on 50K miles and is still on the original brake pads front and back. I just swapped to winter tires not long ago and there's plenty of life left in the pads..

Calgary as far as I know is very limited. I have been to motorwerks and it's nice there. I've been away for more than two decades.. but general brakes do not have to be done at any specially shop, it's extremely straight forward..so if you know or have any connections to a general mechanic I would start there. It's also a great time to learn to diy
