Automatic windshield wipers

Very happy with my 2018 X2 xdrive. About to hit 20,000 miles. Drives great, looks great, etc.

The one thing that drives me crazy, however, is the windshield wipers. When I put it on automatic/intermittent it is always too fast or too slow. I much prefer the way it worked in old cars where you actually could set the interval for intermittent wipers.

When I bring it in for the oil change at 20k, I will ask them if anything can be done. Till then, any advice would be appreciated.

Possibly the interior windshield surface in front of the rain sensor needs to be cleaned. If that doesn't work, some cars will go to true intermittent if the sensor is disconnected entirely. Haven't tried that!

You can use the intermittent dial to change speed/frequency

I feel your pain, I have never liked auto wipers in any car I have had. Yes I adjust the sensitivity but I must be OCD it is almost always too slow or too fast. That's it I am never driving in the rain again (seriously don't like the auto function, absolutely love the car in all weather, first snow this week)

I have tried the dial. Sometimes it helps. Most of the time no. I assume most here do not have this issue. Hopefully it is something the dealer can address.

I don't think it's that others "don't have the issue" I think it's that most don't actually care or notice

I could be wrong, but I thought the wipers either had intermittent OR auto setting.

On auto you can adjust the sensitivity which then adjusts the wiper frequency depending on raindrops detected on the windscreen.

You drive your BMW in the rain?????

Seriously, the little adjustment dial seems to work for me...but I leave it in auto and seems to work for me.

I have the same issue! I had it with my M240 and now with my X2.
The slowest speed on auto seems to be way too fast.

I can't remember, but is there a setting through Bimmercode that lets you adjust auto wiper sensitivity (i..e in addition to the physical knob)? Or is that only for auto lights...

Update- It turns out I had a bad rain sensor. It was replaced today. Not crazy after all.

I'm not a fan of the intermittent setting either. I find sometimes it's not fast enough and sometimes it goes too fast, for a given setting. It's very inconsistent.

One bright spot, in light wet snow, the sensor appears to work perfectly. In rain I agree, it's at best inconsistent, at worst, deranged.

not "intermittent"

It's wrong to call them "intermittent". The setting is "automatic", as it will turn on regular and/or fast if necessary.

I agree that they're inconsistent. Seems that a less sensitive seetting (knob on stalk) results in "better" results.

I find the only setting on the stalk where it doesn't wipe too often is the bottom one. I had the car out yesterday in a very light rain and on any other setting it wanted to give me a constant wipe when all that was needed was intermittent.

Speaking of wipers, this is the first BMW I have had where the wipers don’t slow automatically when stopped, such as at a stop light. Why would BMW delete this feature?
