2018 X1 Weird behavior
I have a 2018 X1 with 6,000 on board.
The other day, I stopped to get the mail, left the engine running and the door open. At that point I got a message "Ignition is on". Once I got back in the vehicle and closed the door, the message went away. Since the engine was still running, I put the vehicle in Drive and, to my surprise, it started rolling backwards and gave me the message "Transmission was not in park". I have put it in "Park" and back in "Drive" several times but it kept rolling backwards. Finally, I restarted the engine and it behaved normally after that. I took it to the dealership and they said it was a programming glitch and decided to reinstall the software. Today, stopping to get the mail, the exact same thing happened again. Anybody experienced this? What is going on? |

Did you take the key with you when you exited the car? It sounds like the car went into safe mode, then didn't quite come back out of it.

I'd be pretty concerned that it did not go into Park when commanded. But if you're careful to avoid the trigger I guess it's something that doesn't make an emergency.
Keyless cars will keep running if the key goes out of range, but they have various anti-theft and safety measures around the condition. At some point, many of them will refuse to move, or slow down in the expectation they'll stop and immobilize. But I don't believe there are hard and fast rules about it, it depends on the manufacturer and the model. I'll try it on my X2. |

I am just wondering if I didn't do something wrong. Maybe it required to restart the engine before putting it in gear? |

I only did a basic check by putting the car in park with engine running and walking away. Leaving the key out of range with the door open, the car did not complain about anything but the open door. Closing the door from outside, the display said "Remote Error, car will not start". Opening the door and bringing the key back, the car behaved normally.
I had hoped to try some other things but something came up. Maybe tomorrow. |

I usually leave the car with engine running, in Park, and with the doors locked from outside, with no remote inside the car. There is no problem when coming back to the car. Everything is as normal, no issues.

I've found there is a very specific sequence about putting the car in park, taking off your belt and opening the door which results in the car shutting off (not stop starting, but shutting off) the engine and you get the ignition on. This is the same behavior you'll get with pushing the start button (when car is off) without your foot on the brake. If you hit the right sequence the car shuts off as you found, if you do not hit the right sequence it keeps running as you expected but did not experience.

Unfortunately, I had another surprise tonight. I put the vehicle in park, left the engine running and opened the door. Instead of the display showing "Door Open", I got a warning the "ignition is on". So, I closed the door. At that point, the vehicle shut down. As if I pressed START/STOP. Only that I did not touch anything.
I tend to believe more and more that there is an electronic issue. |

It's a safety measure. The driver exiting the running vehicle is generally an unsafe condition. But I agree, shutting the car down does seem a bit extreme. Perhaps there is a "presence" sensor that isn't perfectly consistent.
For grins, try opening the door to exit the vehicle with it in gear. The transmission will automatically go into Park, even if the car is rolling forward slightly. Ok, be careful when trying this. |

Only try it if your vehicle has the electronic shifter, obviously!
I’ve never had our X1 shut the engine off on its own outside of the auto start/stop, and that includes getting out while it’s running. There are circumstances in which the ignition will shut off automatically, but that’s only supposed to happen if the engine isn’t running at the time. |

What is troubling is that it behaves differently most of the time: some times it just displays "Door Open", some times "Ignition Switched On" and, other times, the vehicle just shuts off.
I'm taking it to the dealership on Monday. They want to drive it around and see what's going on. |
