2018 X1 Weird behavior

I have a 2018 X1 with 6,000 on board.
The other day, I stopped to get the mail, left the engine running and the door open. At that point I got a message "Ignition is on". Once I got back in the vehicle and closed the door, the message went away. Since the engine was still running, I put the vehicle in Drive and, to my surprise, it started rolling backwards and gave me the message "Transmission was not in park". I have put it in "Park" and back in "Drive" several times but it kept rolling backwards. Finally, I restarted the engine and it behaved normally after that.
I took it to the dealership and they said it was a programming glitch and decided to reinstall the software. Today, stopping to get the mail, the exact same thing happened again.
Anybody experienced this? What is going on?

Did you take the key with you when you exited the car? It sounds like the car went into safe mode, then didn't quite come back out of it.

Yes, the key was in my pocket all the time.
Should I be worried about what happened?

I'd be pretty concerned that it did not go into Park when commanded. But if you're careful to avoid the trigger I guess it's something that doesn't make an emergency.

Keyless cars will keep running if the key goes out of range, but they have various anti-theft and safety measures around the condition. At some point, many of them will refuse to move, or slow down in the expectation they'll stop and immobilize. But I don't believe there are hard and fast rules about it, it depends on the manufacturer and the model.

I'll try it on my X2.

Have you had the chance to check it out?

I am just wondering if I didn't do something wrong. Maybe it required to restart the engine before putting it in gear?

I only did a basic check by putting the car in park with engine running and walking away. Leaving the key out of range with the door open, the car did not complain about anything but the open door. Closing the door from outside, the display said "Remote Error, car will not start". Opening the door and bringing the key back, the car behaved normally.

I had hoped to try some other things but something came up. Maybe tomorrow.

I usually leave the car with engine running, in Park, and with the doors locked from outside, with no remote inside the car. There is no problem when coming back to the car. Everything is as normal, no issues.
