sdrive2.0 petrol engine ticking sound

Hi there, I thought it might be good to get a second opinion...
I have recently found a strange ticking sound from the engine, this happens all the time even after a an hour or two hours drive. This is after 1 hour driving.

When I add a bit more RPM, the tick sound gets faster and becoming a constant "ding" sound that I can hear from my driving seat....

Here's a video recording:

Here's a video recording when adding a bit RPM:

Is this normal or what might have gone wrong from your experience?

thanks in advance, much appreciated.

Hi Beams,

I have a similar ticking noise in my 2017 X1 2.0i (192bhp). When I asked a BMW service guy (that I can call somewhat 'a friend'), he said that it was normal, and pretty much any 4-cylinder BMW has some kind of ticking noise.

In my case, the noise started after only 30,000 Kms, and it's more notorious when cold. Other than that, the car works fine, with no CELs or warnings of any kind (currently 40,000 Kms).

I read somewhere that several Minis have the same noise (as you know, we share the same engine), so you may find more information from that side.

Please, keep us posted if you find more information.

Thank you for the response. I will try an oil change first as it's been 8k miles. My service is not due until December. I am sure BMW service will say it's normal…

Funny you mention that because actually, my ticking sound started after an oil change done by BMW. I recall reading the same with some minis.

As you know, different countries/areas may need different oils. So maybe they are mixing things up? And I can maybe accept that from an Indy shop, but from BMW like my case is unbelievable. So anyway, I'm just thinking out loud.

Please, keep us posted.

Probably because, like many car makers, BMW petrol (gasoline) engines use Petrol/Gasoline Direct Injection. I’ve read before that this type of fuel injection, which gives improved fuel consumption, can give a ticking sound from under the bonnet and my 1.5 litre petrol engine is no exception. Just search and you’ll probably find adequate information to put your mind at rest.

This is noise from the fuel injectors--totally normal.

after oil chance the sound was much smoother and exhaust sound has less metal "ding". It's probably due for an oil change earlier than the service noice.

It's also funny enough that BMW system emailed me for a visual service a week after.
