Footage of HUD and adaptive cruise control demo. Sounds Swedish I think. No subtitles I'm afraid. But it's the only footage of the HUD I've found so far. Watch it in full screen. It's in glorious 4K!!

Also this: from official BMW Russia YouTube channel.

White balance is way off and colours are messed up (for artsy fartsy reasons I would presume)! If you're interested in Chestnut Bronze, don't judge it by this video.

Definitely a good review. Some people on other threads have commented that it is not as a high up a seating position as they originally thought, all though the reviewer says it is higher than the 3 series touring. Well, commenting on the height of it, many were saying they might purchase this instead of the X3. I would suggest you go back to the first picture and you will see the reviewer's complete head is above the roof line. That is way lower than the higher riding X3.

Autocar's full review, as opposed to their First Drive report, is now in print (14 October) and online in their Readly edition. I presume it won't appear on autocar.co.uk till later.

Here is their summary:

"Owners of the previous X1 simply won't recognise the spacious, flexible, classy customer they've taken delivery of here -- and refugees from other crossover models will have plenty to say in praise of the car's practicality, quality and handsomeness. But those with a broader experience of BMW's model range may not be quite so bowled over by this car and neither, quite, are we. Although its performance is strong, it's not outstandingly so and the same is true of its real-world fuel economy. The X1's handling is spry but it isn't a desperately slick or engaging car to drive. And, for a premium-brand car, it still leaves a fair amount to be desired on refinement.

In reflection of all that, and of the high price asked for the car, our rank for the X1 places it outside of the top two. It's a broad and challenging class, surely, but also one in which BMW could expect to do better if it offered better value for money."

The X1 starts at about $34K. That's similar money to a loaded Mazda CX-5, which actually has roughly comparable options. And the BMW comes with 4yr/50k mile maintenance included. How much value for money do they want?

Different warranties and inclusion packages in different markets affect the "value "equation in those markets; Autocar's comments relate to the UK market.

For example, fully loaded CX-5 is still about $AUD10k cheaper in Australia than the X1. But then, it's not regarded as being in the same segment. Here, the X1 competes with the MB GLA and Audi Q3. Maybe also the Lexus NX. Sitting just above is the MB GLC, which really looks good value....undriven!

Autocar, the oldest motoring mag in the world, is not published in, or written for, the US. BMW does not include 4-year maintenance here. The cars that Autocar regards as better buys than the X1 are the Qashqai and the Kuga. The CX-5 is fifth in their ranking, the Yeti fourth. The comparable CX-5 model costs 3,400 less here, but they still rate it two places worse than the X1.

Don't laugh but I'm actually cross shopping the X1 against the Ford Escape here in the USA. It's called the Kuga in Europe. I would get the 2.0 turbo engine which actually quite fun to drive. I can't find a similar fun-to-drive compact SUV from Mazda, Honda, or Toyota. Plus I think the Escape Looks very nice in white. It's just funny I'm comparing a $27K with a $37K vehicle. I'm waiting to test drive an X1.

Just an FYI, I really like the looks of the Fiat 500x. However I don't think I could live with such a slow engine. At best, it does 0-60 in 8.5+ seconds.

Not laughing. I did the same -- went to the local Ford dealer and checked out the latest Escape titanium edition with the new Ford Sync 3 system (which replaces last year's horrible Microsoft-based MyFord Touch system). Sync 3 is fast and intuitive, and overall I liked the Escape a lot. I especially appreciated the fact it had physical buttons for all the primary functions that the touchscreen had.

However, by the time I added the moonroof, 19" wheels, option package 301A, etc, the Ford was pushing $32K.

For an extra $10K I'd rather have a real BMW, nicely optioned, with its reportedly better driving dynamics, faster acceleration, superior AWD system, upscale cachet, and its included 4 yr/50k service plan instead of an Escape, even though it's a very nice Escape. Just my humble opinion.

That's interesting how different the UK market is. It sounds like the X1 is quite overpriced over there... or perhaps BMW is pricing the X1 more fairly here to gain competitive advantage? Maybe a little of both. The compact SUV market here is incredibly cutthroat and it'll be interesting to see how the X1 performs sales-wise with competition from seemingly every major world automaker (except the French ones) scrambling for a piece of the same compact SUV segment here.

It is interesting for sure. The US pricing for the X1 is an absolute bargain compared to the UK, as you can get a completely loaded X1 for $50,000 in the US vs. 46,000GBP = $70,000US for a similarly equipped X1 in the UK.

Australian X1 pricing seems decent compared to the US actually, even though we usually get ripped off here. $50,000 USD is about $68,000 AUD which isn't far off the mark for a 25i with a lot of kit. 46,000 = $98,000 AUD... ouch! In our neighbour New Zealand the 25i without options is $83,500 NZD (= $75,000 AUD). Seems like BMW is being aggressive here to go head to head with Mercedes which dominates the premium sector.

Here's a video review of the X1 versus Mercedes GLA vs Audi Q3 from Malaysia, in English. (Spoiler, the X1 appears to be their overall favorite. )
