Pothole

Big bang and I said “Oh deary me !!! “ . Steering wheel was a couple of degrees out so took it to dealers for a check. They gave it a 4 wheel alignment check and said it was out but no serious damage more importantly steering rack was ok. Feels good now. Only cost £99.
Got away light, it was a big bang.

Cant believe this. Ambulance comes round a blind bend with flashing lights half on my side of road whilst going round a car that had pulled over. I had to swerve to miss it and nearside wheel hit curb. New wheel and tyre and wheel align £1000. Still better off than the person in it.

Shouldn't your insurance cover this?

Yes but by the time Ive paid excess and future increases in premiums for car and motorbike it may be better to just pay it.

Fortunately the steering rack was not damaged ( Replacement £2000+), which is a common issue in any front wheel impact.

Don't, even when they do. They will likely raise your rate to get the money back.

If it had needed a steering rack, I would have claimed. You just have to weighup whether its worth claiming.

Insurance is probably useful when a big loss is incurred from an accident, and it exceeds your ability to cover the expenses. For example, you are at fault with large property damages or someone else gets hurt. In another scenario, the other driver is at fault but has no insurance and not willing to pay or not able to pay. Your insurance will cover that and your premium won't be affected.

But these are rare circumstances. My personal opinion is that if you are financially sound, insurance is not that useful. If you are a good/defensive driver, you are likely losing money buying insurance, and that's how insurance companies making money. The law requires insurance coverage just to make sure people have the ability to pay or get paid when accidents happen.

Filling a small claim against comprehensive coverage is definitely not worth it.

Had new wheel, tyre and wheel align around £1300. Asked what they would do with damaged wheel and was told they would scrap it. I said that I wanted it back to make a coffee table if nothing else, too nice to scrap. Rang a wheel repair company close to me on the off chance and they said that it was repairable in the lathe and would cost £135.
