There's no war because Mercedes stated 2 weeks or so ago that they will build an X2 competitor.
I mean, whaa'?! The GLA is already there doing its thing, but it looks like it is not good enough if Mercedes thinks it should build another one to battle X2. |

I could see liking the X2 in theory, because it's small and "almost" like a compact little wagon or 5 door hatch...but the FWD just kills it for me. If it were RWD and they made a real ///M...well, then you'd be talking. And no, the M40i version won't count for that....

The biggest difference I noticed between the GLA and X2 is interior space, particularly for rear seat and back. The GLA is very tight. The X2 isn't cavernous like the X1, but the space is sufficient for adults. That's why I ordered one.

The GLA as a whole sucks there's no denying that. It's just a fact of life. This isn't an anti-Mercedes thing. The point of this commercial is to shyt on the GLA250. |

I'd love to see Mercedes reply. Clearly BMW is desperate. |

I just took the ad to mean BMW has fun colors, Mercedes is boring and has boring colors and boring wheels, which generally seems true. |

It's an ad FFS. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it a bad ad. MB already announced a vehicle to compete with the X2. They need to, because the GLA hasn't been a success. The X1 has stood up well against the GLA, Q3 and other vehicles. The X2 is different, but even better in many respects. I've driven both of them and I think the X2 is an improvement. BMW is not desperate. They are in a very strong position in this market segment.

If a sports sedan (or coupe even) could legitimately attract a high performance SUV buyer, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, etc. wouldn’t be pumping out high performance SUVs to begin with - they’d double down on their performance passenger cars instead. Instead they are doing the opposite because that’s the reality of the market. BMW is going to introduce the X2 M35i later this year and they are absolutely going to position it as a performance SUV for the enthusiast. If they had an X2 M ready, then you better believe they’d bring that to market too. |

But, that’s the not the norm, and like I said in the part of my post you didn’t reply to, BMW and their competitors offer performance SUVs for a reason. While it does happen in some cases, the majority of buyers don’t cross shop a sedan and an SUV (nor a sports car and sedan). And yes, the SUV market is absolutely blowing up right now if you didn’t notice. BMW will eventually offer an X2 M and other UKL M-proper products. I don’t think you would bet against that. If you would, I’m happy to make a wager with you. Even if it takes another full generation, once they’ve caught up with their German counterparts in the compact segments, they’ll allocate the resources for true M variants. It’s coming, but it’s not here yet, so the spin doctoring is not unexpected. |
