F48 cold start rough idle

1 out of 10 times my '17 F48 sdrive28i will idle rough on first start when I need to reverse from garage. Sometimes shifting back to park straightens it out. Mentioned to my dealer. They'd have to keep overnight and see a code to address it. Too far, no time.
I can get an error through iCarly:"ignition timing idle, cold start. firing angle too early."

Anything that I can address myself?

I too have rough idle at times in Park. And it gets difficult to shift from P to D when that happens.

There is a service bulletin regarding this. Take it in to your local
service center for a software update.

Mine runs rough on a cold start. When the engine first starts it shakes the whole car.

Hi mikeyb74,

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I'm having the same issue on my 2017 X1 2.0i M-Sport. I also created a thread: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1855388

Did you manage to solve the problem? It's driving me crazy , and BMW doesn't know what it is.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Cold start

My car has the same cold start issue. Bmw recommends the software fix. My motor mount has faied 41,000 mikes. Could the rough vibrations when stalling cause the motor mount to fail?

Unrelated to any software issues, the reverse scenario (failed motor mount causing rough idle) can be true, which was the case for me. Check out this thread for more info, which includes some photos of my leaking engine mount: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...t=engine+mount

Motor mounts going bad is a common problem with Minis that share the same platform as our generation X1. I've also seen a couple other forum members mention having their motor mounts replaced.

Dropped our 2018 X-Drive off for this today. I told them about the Service Bulletin and they found it. Supposedly applied "a" fix. Kept vehicle overnight to verify the problem is gone tomorrow. Will share info. when we get the X1 back.

In my case, that I have also a problem with revs going high and then low in cold start, the dealer found a service bulletin and replaced the MAF sensor. However, it didn't solve the problem.

I put a stand-by on this because the dealer didn't seem to find an answer .

So, I will wait for your insight guys and probably go to an indy shop with specific directions haha.

The problem is that mine doesn't hold it steady and it's somewhat random. So it starts normal, then goes a little down and then goes higher, up to 1500RPM or so. After a couple of seconds, go back to ~1100RPM and a couple of seconds later goes to ~800RPM which is normal idle. Please, take a look at this video I uploaded (I don't know how to insert it here ): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wis...ew?usp=sharing

If yours hold steady ~1000RPM and then goes down, that's normal, because you know the engine is cold.

Maybe software issue too. I previously had an extremely high torque tune and I would have very rough idles. Now, I changed tuners and got a smooth linear tune and no more rough idles.

I had a software update from BMW since it is like a known problem, but it didn't fix my issue. And besides that, it's somewhat random; it doesn't happen every time.

In my head, it's more related to the CCV/PCV or oxygen sensors, but they all look good, according to BMW.

Now I bought some gasoline additives to clean the fuel system because here in Mexico, the gasoline sucks, man. I'm trying this one from Liqui-Moly: https://products.liqui-moly.com/gaso...cleaner-6.html

So our X1 rough idle in reverse at cold start issue has been fixed. Pic attached of Service Bulletin they applied. They reflashed all the modules which wiped all of my coding but this did not lock me out of the vehicle. I was able to recode everything (Rear foglights, seatbelt chimes, disclaimers etc..) using Bimmercode.

Just realized I posted this question on the X2 board but probably more fitting here...

Did anyone that experienced this issue also have some smoking coming from the exhaust?

We’re looking for a 2017ish x1 for our teenage daughter. Test drove one yesterday and it drove great except on startup, it seemed to idle rough and felt like it was struggling to stay running. I didn’t spend enough time with it to see if it would go away after a while. We were pretty turned off so just left.

I had a similar issue with my f30 (minus the smoking) which was resolved with new plugs and coils. Originally I was thinking to run from this vehicle but now that I’ve slept on it, I’m wondering if it could be reasonable for me to manage and maintain myself. It’s a pretty good deal so that’s why I’m considering.

I have experienced this near identical issue - "1 out of 10 times my '17 F48 sdrive28i will idle rough on first start when I need to reverse from garage." I have a '18 Xdrive that will stall out maybe 1 out of 20 times on a cold start when I put it in reverse. Surprisingly, ever since I installed my aFe cold air intake I have not had the problem. Maybe the car just needed to breath better?
