I'm 63 years old, I've had cars since I was 16 and most years probably more than 1, some year 3 but mostly 2. I've driven almost everything out these. We live in Montreal where the roads are not in the best of shapes and elevated highways have expansion joints; spring pot holes, sunken manholes, etc. You get the picture. I have 2 sports cars and I can honestly tell you that this is the perfect urban guerilla vehicle. Easy to park, easy on gas, peppy, has great visibility, amazing headlights, excellent space for a couple. Really comfortable seats, great infotainment system especially if you upgrade the speakers yourself like I did...and a ride that is firm yet very compliant with excellent handling for a tall vehicle. What is daily driver? A Rolls Royce?

I have a Canadian BMW X1 AWD with all the bells and whistles and It's a pure joy to drive especially on our crappy pot holes, cracks, crevices, uneven pavement. Montreal roads are notoriously bad in the spring too. And if I hear one more comment that it doesn't have blind spot monitoring! Get yourself a small fish eye mirror...some of them come with a tint...and with all the glass in this SUV it has the best visibility of anything I've ever owned. Just learn to do the shoulder check when changing lanes and don't rely on just some electronic device to "drive" you cause many times these things don't work properly like in winter, heavy rain or pedestrians or with bikes. Learn how to drive properly! Respect the road and others and remember driving is a privilege, not a right.

^^^ Agreed. All the electronic nannies are taking pleasure out of driving and not to mention more things could go wrong. Then there's the disturbing trend of putting iPads, not one but multiple, into cars. This is getting ridiculous with each new redesign.

+1.

The electronic doodads will fail and cost $$$ to replace (can't repair them).

Yet, there are people complaining about not having blind spot monitoring. I still recall my driving instructor 47 years ago telling me to check blindspots by turning my head to look over my shoulder ... I still do that.

Or adjust your side mirrors properly to eliminate blind spots and the need to turn your head.

Actually, I already have my side mirrors adjusted that way ... I check the mirrors, then still turn my head for a wider view.

Old habits die hard and still works.

Heck, I could drive cars without side mirrors. Just exercise your neck muscles, the snowflake generations are weak.

I guess BMW should stop putting engines in their vehicles. Engines are pointless, real skilled men used to use horses for their wagons.

I still turn my head but with the side mirrors adjusted outwardly is not much need for it anymore. I learned this from the BMW Performance Center and not from basic drivers ed as it should have been.

And yes I learned how to drive on a 1977 Renault 12 sedan with raw 4 speed manual on the floor, no power steering and drum brakes all around while commanding a carbureted 4 pot probably not making more than 69-80Hp at the wheel. That car sounded awesome and felt fast for some reason, probably too light...

X1 Trailering - 2020

Hey,

Heed some help please!

I have a 2020 X1 and trying to figure out the wiring for the rear tail lights. For some reason my 2020 has only have 3 wires to each plug attached to eachtail light; Black/Yellow Gray/Purple and Solid Brown - same for the both left and right rear lights. I am also installing a Tekonsha Part #: 119190 to wiring protection but is need 4 wires, stop, running, left and right but this x1 has only 3 wires on each side vs 4 light most videos I have seen. BMW have done something different that the 2017 video I seen by using one less wire.

Here want the x1 has: starting from left side on the suv.
1 wire. Gray/Purple - looks like the tail light circuit / running lights.
2 wire. Black/Yellow - looks like the stop BUT I can also left signal and the hazards show voltage on the same wire. is it possible bNW is using the same wire to 2 functions? stop and signal?
3 wire. Solid Brown - I have no idea what that one is for out of the 3.

As this point I want to I need running, stop, left and right final from 3 wires.

Anyone have any suggestions please.

We have a 2018 X1 and a 2018 X3 M40i, of course the M40i is nicer, faster and overall feels like a higher quality vehicle but the X1 is still a very capable little SUV. It drives and handles very well. We just got back from an 1800 mile road trip and it performed extremely well and carried all our luggage and gear plus our 100 lbs dog. I don't think the X3 is much bigger inside than the X1.

Curious and a bit off topic. How was your road trip experience considering being in the midst of a pandemic?
