Vibrations during driving
Hey!
Got a F48 20i mSport xDrive produced 11.2016 and experiencing vibrations in the car when driving from 30kph and up to at least 120kph. Doesn't seem like the vibrations go away after a certain speed. The vibrations are not very strong, but very annoying. It is probably not the tires, cause I checked all of them for unbalance. Also tried my other wheel set, vibrations here too. There are no extra vibrations during braking. Anybody else experienced something like this? Any idea what it could be? Appreciate your thoughts. |

Probably a dumb question, but do you have Driving Assist or Driving Assist Plus?
If it's an intermittent vibration felt through the steering wheel only and you do have DA or DA Plus, it's most likely your Lane Departure Warning. It's activated when you change lanes without indicating. The system also gets confused every once in a while when you drive in extremely wet conditions with bright lights reflecting off of the road surface or driving on poor roads with random and incorrect lane marking. Can be turned off in iDrive, but I wouldn't recommend it at all. |

Yes I have DA Plus, but it is not that whats causing the vibration. The lane departure warning causes a different vibration, and can only feel it in the steering wheel when the lane departure warning triggers. Went to the BMW dealer, they test drove it, could also feel the vibration. Told me to go to the wheel dealer who mounted my tires on the rims. They found that 3 of them was not correctly fitted on the rims. Phew I thought. They fixed it, went out to test, and after like 60km of driving, the vibration came back! Dammit. Do you still think there is something with the rubber or the rims? Or could be something else? Driveshaft, transmission, engine? |

I honestly can't tell. Doubt a mechanical issue with chassis/suspension or drivetrain would just disappear on its own for 60km. But that's just my totally uneducated guess!

It's quite possible that running the three ill-fitted tyres/wheels may have caused other driveline issues. Your best approach is to go back to the dealer and have it thoroughly checked out

Yeah, but think it is very strange that the vibration came back after 60km of driving after the wheels where corrected. Maybe there is problems with the rubber on the rims? That the rubber is not correctly dimensioned for the rims?
Will contact dealer again today to hear what they have to say. Don't know if anybody else have experience with Pirelli Cinturato P7 run-flat 225/50-18 on the mSport rims? |

I used to have a Maxima and had problems finding someone to do proper balancing. The rims had to be balanced then the whole tire. It also had to be a newer balancing machine.

Go to a tire shop with the latest Hunter balancing machine... it does a dynamic balancing at speed versus static balancing at rest.... possibly one or more of your rims are bent or your tires are out-of-round.

Every tire change on my m3's have resulted in vibrations. It has taken up to 3 road force balances for it to be corrected. Granted, M3 is super sensitive to variances. Variables such as the place that does the balancing, the dude doing the balancing needs to be taken into consideration. I had to send back tires to TireRack for being out of round, it took 3 attempts to get balanced to no avail. FWIW, my vibration issues have always been tires or balancing issues, never suspension/wheel issues.

I am curious: are you having Run Flat Tyres?
Because I feel annoyed by RFT and I am planning to change both summer and winter tyres with Non-RFT. |

Don't know if the tires are causing the OP's headaches, but I think I'd start there. After going to a middle of the road Grand Touring tire (Yokohama Ascend GT), everything about the car is better--and the runflats were practically new. They really are that bad. Handling, vibrations at speed, noise in the cabin--everything is so much better ditching the runflats. The runflats also seem to be terribly unreliable given the number of replacements the average X1 seems to require. |
