My M35i stalled today
Today while driving to work I experienced something very irregular and scary with my 2019 X2 M35i. I was driving along at 35 mph and all of a sudden the car started to hesitate when I attempted to accelerate. I was in comfort mode and shifter was in D.
I pressed the accelerator pedal down more and the car actually slowed down. When I released the accelerator it coasted but every time I pressed the pedal again, it slowed down and hesitated. It felt like it was gasping for air if that makes sense. After about 15 seconds of this I began to maneuver to the shoulder and as I was doing so the vehicle stalled. Completely stalled. I restarted the car after a few seconds and so far it's been fine since. Does anyone have any experience with this in their X2 or another BMW? I'm lucky I wasn't on the highway when it happened but I'm super concerned about it happening again. This combined with the lag issue really makes me want to get rid of this car. |

Not sure if it's the same thing, but I had something very similar happen a couple of times with my 1st gen X1. I had the same sensation you're describing; majorly disconcerting. I went straight to my dealership and they said some kind of built-in safety system had been activated, which effectively limits all kinds of functions. It shows up when they read your key, although not necessarily why it was triggered. It really freaks you out for sure, but it never amounted to anything (for me)...

I had a 330i loaner just not respond once. It gave me enough to get rolling out into traffic and did nothing, different issue as this seemed to be a drive by wire problem but it was very scary indeed.

Given that it went away, I'd lean toward the sensor. They can be flaky, across brands. Fortunately, they are quite easy to replace. I'd have the dealer (or any shop with a BMW-aware tool) scan it, hopefully there are codes to provide breadcrumbs. |

Car definitely entered limp mode. Likely cause is the O2 sensor or sensors would be my guess. Once the underlying issue is addressed, highly unlikely you'll experience it again. It happened to me on the highway once with my 2015 X3. I went into limp mode at speed. Managed to pull off to the side w/o issue. Restarted and all was well. Had the car checked a couple of days later and turned out to be the O2 sensor.
