MG Flasger and 2018 X1 a no go, say it anint so

Well, for those of you that have MY 2018 X1 and are looking for a little more oomph and were thinking about the MG Flasher, you'll need to look elsewhere. After downloading the software for my wife, purchasing the licensing and trying to flash, the software wasnt able to recognize the X1's model ECU. MG Flasher tech support was quick at diagnosing the issue and and where able to confirm that the X1 ECU version wasnt supported. A huge bummer. So no MGFlasher or BootMod3. Does anyone make a flash solution for the X1???

Well, I hope you didn't update because other than bench-flashing, there is no traditional OBD flashing anymore. If you did update, I hope you find a good reputable bench-flasher, those pins on the X1 ECU are TINY, quite a delicate job:

No, I never even got that far. A shame. Wifey was looking for a few more horses and we thought MGFlasher would be the easy fix. I guess she'll continue joy riding in my M240 for a while longer.

Have you considered the Evolve Tune for the X1? They're based in UK, but also have a US arm as well. They OBD flash my 2017 without problem. Maybe they have a version for your 2018 X1 .

As long as your software hasn’t been updated by BMW recently then the above should be true. My software was updated around Jan 2020 and my ECU is not flashable via OBD. Even after having the ECU unlocked physically by a shop I was told that the software used to remotely flash by Evolve wouldn’t work on my X1. It sounds like tuners would have to invest in a secondary remote OBD software system for users like me. Instead my only solution is to physically update the ECU at a shop if I want to modify anything.

This is a setback. I was really hoping to get MGFlash or BM3. If you are saying that the ECU cant be OBD flashed any longer, that is a bummer.

I guess I can always wait for the warranty to expire and then go JB4 piggyback, assuming that still works.

JB4 works, I have it installed but on Map 0 just to monitor some parameters at times. Why wait for the warranty to expire for the JB4? If warranty were a concern then I'd go with the JB4 rather than an ECU flash.

Um...your tuner could have used Evolve's custom tune and then uploaded it using bench-flash? My tuner uploaded his custom tune like that, he didn't do the tune, he had 412 Motorsport do it and then he just uploaded it.

Yes they bench flashed the Evolve tune, sorry if that was confusing. My point was mainly that despite unlocking an ECU some OBD solutions will still not work on some BMWs who's software has been updated.

Agreed, I was under the impression that OP 2018 X1 was not updated yet by BMW.

I'm not sure if any software updates had been done to my wife's X1 or not. But none the less, the two tunes that I was interested in (MGFlasher and BM3) dont support the 2018 X1. If there was more support for Evolve here in the North East I might be inclined to try, but there is little to no information on their web site about the tune and I dont see much info around the net on it. So sadly, no matter how good it might be, thats not a great sign, so I'll just strike Evolve from the list.

You can also just send them an email sales@evolveautomotive.com and they'll guide you on how to proceed if you haven't updated your car.

You can also try DervTech. They’re from the UK and do a lot of tuning on the B46/48 engine for Minis. I think they have local tuners in NY state. I liked one option they had for the JCW that delivered stock HP in eco mode, 260Hp in comfort, and 300hp in sport mode. This was after buying the Evolve tune, but otherwise I would’ve gone with them bc it would be nice to change “maps” with the drive modes.

I think Turner Motorsport can also give you a custom tune at their shop.

I've been trying to find anything on the tune but have come up with bupkas so far. I'll give them a shout to see about getting some detailed information about the tune.

Thanks.

My wife needs something easy-peazy to manage/maintain. Without any local support for the tune, that makes it a hard sell for me. I'll look into what Turner has to offer. My M3 is filled to the brim with their race parts. Thank you very much for the tip on DervTech.

This is the tune for the F48 with the 231Hp engine (same tune I got)
https://www.evolvetuning.us/makes/mini/mini-f56/mini-f56-jcw/mini-f56-jcw-ecu-tuning/evolve-ecu-remap-performance-upgrade-and-evolve-r-mini-f56-jcw-manual.html

I’d try finding a local mini tuner in NY, tunes doe the F56/F54/F60 JCWs should all work on the X1.

Yup, same Tune for my 2017 X1. Interestingly, Evolve now has a Tune for the X1 28i that's 10 hp less than the F56 version
