Front brake pads replacement after 28000km (17000mi)???
Hi All,
I bought a 2017 X1 xDrive18d M Sport with 28000km (17400mi) and did 2500km (1500mi) in first two months of owning the car. When I took over the car, immediately on highway when I would need to brake, brakes sounded pretty loud - I could pretty much visualize how brake pads are rubbing onto discs and it sounded like a) pads are at the end of their life or b) the discs are little rusty from car sitting outside on rain for the last two weeks, waiting for me to pick it up so the rust needed to go away.... but need to mention that the vibration and noise would transfer into a car feeling pretty unsafe. In these last two months this improved but the noise is still there when braking even at low low speeds... I mean, when I move the car through parking and slightly brake I still believe brakes are too loud ad you can hear (and visualize) pads rubbing onto discs louder then usual. I had a chance recently to drive a company car as well a rent-a-car recently and there is no such noice coming when breaking. When did you guys change your front brake pads and after how many km/miles??? Did anyone had any problem with discs on this car? I would be really surprized if they tell me that the car already needs new brake pads after such a low milage. Actually I never heard anyone changing brake pads before 50000km (31000mi). I got in touch with BMW garage and they told me that if I'll need to replace the front brake pads it will cost me around EUR780 (USD887)!! This is not covered by the warranty. On the other hand I believe discs would be covered by the warranty if they need to be replaced. Any feedback would be appreciated. Cheers, G. |

Never underestimate the ability of poor drivers to do the unthinkable. On the other hand brakes are not considered under warranty nor IMNSHO should they be because of the story I told above |

You may have certain rights against the selling dealer in the EU, whether you purchased the car in Austria or another EU country, especially if it was a pre-existing fault when you bought the car. This link contains some very useful information, but perhaps you should return to the selling garage first and try to get them to correct any issue with the brakes if, within the relative EU law, you have recourse against them. This is covered in the website info.
Your local Consumer Rights department may also help point you in the right direction: https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizen...q/index_en.htm Last edited by oakey46; 06-27-2019 at 01:52 PM.. |

Thanks for the feedback D... My dad changed brake pads on his Toyota Made in Japan at 120.000km (74.500mi) and after replacement he did another 90.000km (56.000mi) with a new ones - as a taxi driver. With other car brands... Mercedes after 45k km, Hyundai 30-45k km... so yeah I am kind of surprised especially when the BMW dealer who sold me the car said that the car was in top condition and they went through inspection of 70+ points (I even got the certificate) and got the car with extended warrranty and free servise for another 2.5 years. If the brakes are at the end, shouldn't the sensor notify that the replacement is required? Dad just told me that it could be the isssue with pads being too hard abusing the discs... he aparently had the same issue but after replacing the pads with the softer ones, everything went back to normal. |

I've owned way too many cars so far, and each car has it's own characteristic. Some wear brakes fast, and some never wear. The only way I'd call it a defect is if the brakes are dragging for some reason, and that you could easily test with your finger (careful of burning yourself). Or better a thermal laser thermometer. You could certainly change the pads to a different material, but stock is stock. I personally always try to go more aggressive for the brakes, and go with a ceramic/semi-metallic that do not dust so much.

Our E84 2013 X1 with MSport brakes is at 53,000 miles and there's plenty of pad left. It must have come with ceramic pads because there is zero brake dust since new and my st of my BMW’s have terrible brake dust.

Changed the factory front brake pads at 28,500 klms. At 64,500 klms now, the car is on it's third set.
The price you quote is absurdly high. Go to an independent shop, the job will be much cheaper. When I changed for the first time, I was quoted three different price levels for three different specs of pads. I chose the second tier in terms of quality which were half the price quoted for OEM pads at the dealer. They were horrible though, lasted only 20,000 klms. On a different note, I am on the second set for the rears and the shop put pagid brake pads on. Fantastic pads. |

But if the pads were worn out at the time of purchase, the vehicle was technically unroadworthy and falls within the EU legislation to protect the consumer. I suppose there may be some difficulty in proving that to be the case, but if a BMW dealer is putting a car on the road in that state of repair, it doesn't bode well for their reputation once word gets around.

Left the car at the BMW garage today.
Pads were replaced at 28k km before I took the car, but the front discs are blue/purple and it looks like they will require changing (they are covered by the warranty). Should find out in couple of hours... |

The brakes on my F48 suck. I've already have all pads swapped and the front rotors swapped at 15k mi. I was experiencing severe vibrations when braking especially on the highway. It was acting like somebody had been riding the brakes and warped the rotors badly. I don't ride the brakes ...
It's been about another 15k mi and it's just about as bad again. My next service I'm going to complain about the brakes again and see what they say. I like my X1 but have just enough issues with it I don't know if I want it outside of warranty. |

My brake light came on at 23k miles and I took it into the dealer. They replaced the pads for free and said 2-3 X1’s a week are coming in with the same problem. I was impressed they covered it.

Mine were heavily warped too. Being in Atlanta I had a few panic stop situations but nothing that should have destroyed them like that. The pads were replaced and rotors resurfaced under warranty. I then noticed the passenger rear rotor had a concentric score around it and they replaced the rear rotors.

Currently on 23k and X1 is due replacement pads soon - according to the BMW garage that carried out my recent service.
Bought the car from new but I'm not getting a warm fuzzy feeling that BMW will replace under warranty for the reasons stated in this thread - i.e. consumables. UK peeps - have you used independent garages or stuck with BMW for this? |
