Windscreen cracks
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Had the first one fixed by autoglass but it's still visible and right in the hud eyeline, but was covered on insurance so can't complain. Managed to get an almighty chip in it today though so need to see whether I can get the windscreen replaced. Does anyone know whether it's worth going to BMW to get it repaired? Also anyone had similar problems? I know it's probably just bad luck, but in the last 10 years I don't think I've had a single chip, so is the X1 glass not reinforced enough? Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Check for the compatible part here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showpa...diagId=51_3192 Should be either 51317350601 or 51317350600, depending on what other front-camera related options you have. 51317350597 and 51317350595 won't work with the HUD. Last edited by KPD; 10-02-2016 at 08:35 AM.. |

I went initially to my dealer when mine got chipped and cracked (I have BMW Insurance) but they still said to get Autoglass out anyway. As KPD has stressed it does need to be a special HUD compatible version. I am sure there was an imprint on the new screen to confirm it was a HUD version although that will be invisible once installed (was on the edge somewhere). I had to wait a couple of days while they got the screen in - it was not a next day job. They also had a couple of new plastic trims for down the side of the screen in case they get damaged at all - mine were OK but he was willing to fit them anyway and leave me the originals.

Thanks for the replies - I actually had it done yesterday before I'd seen the info about a HUD specific screen, but thankfully they provided one anyway and the Hud looks as sharp as ever!

Got 2 chips in 4 weeks, must be a windscreen of poor quality.
Had a F31 for over 4 years, and got hit by gravel almost every day, never got it chipped or cracked. Sucks that the F48 windscreen chips and cracks easier. |

F48 has one by Guardian (USA owned) , but so does X3,X4 and X5 No problems here with oners on dust and gravel roads. Maybe just bad luck ? The side glass is Fayuo (Chinese owned) on both

Mazda CX-3/5's have been having this issue, and the thought is the windshield has been designed to be load-bearing and cracks more easily... hope this is not a similar issue with the X1.
