X1 Hybrid - relationship between ICE car battery and the electric battery

I am new to having a hybrid car and cannot get my head around the use of the two batteries on the car.

Can somebody explain how each battery is used and is there some connection between the two.

My concern is that I am driving most of the time in electric mode so not charging up the ICE battery with air conditioning, lights etc all in operation do I need to switch to using the ICE to keep the battery charged.

An idiots guide would be helpful

Thanks
