i3 tire?
Has anyone tried an i3 tire/wheel?
full time use, 155/70/19. Diameter comes out to 27.5" - maybe 27" if you can find a used one. Wheel appears to be 5.5" width, would this clear the vertical depth of the well? |

My tire width is 135/70/19 and it is very snug when it go in the cavity toward the bumper. I had to remove the mat to make it fit. I think 135 is the max you can go if you want fit it in the well. I tried the spare wheel from my Audi 145/80/18. The diameter is 27.1" and it did not go in the well because the tire did not go in deep enough that cavity to push the wheel down completely. |

Yeah, that makes sense. I was half tempted to deflate it, possibly ratchet strap it if needed to make it fit and have a small compressor with me.
Especially with an i3 since that tire will be stiffer sidewalls (they're runflats too) maybe the modern spare or similar size is the best option. I like the idea of the spacer vs. having to swap a rear to the front of the front is flat |

The spare I mentioned earlier in this thread fits perfectly in the well without any trouble. I posted a picture further back.
The brake clearance is not just about offset. The front calipers are large *radially* too. My attitude is, I will likely never need this. But if I do and manage to have a front flat, then I have what I need to get home safely. |

I just ordered a M35i with the 20" performance runflats (there's no option to get it without runflats,) is there really that big of a difference between standard tires and runflats?

Have you ever driven a car with runflats? Try it for a year or two and when the runflats wear down, replace them with goflats and decide for yourself.
I’m on my fourth bmw and will be ditching my runflats soon. They’re at 18k miles now. Will probably make it through winter then time for some goflats. None of my cars ever get runflats to replace worn runflats. |

I have three BMWs with runflats. The only thing I have with goflats is my M2 but it handles so differently than our X6, 328i and 230i that it's probably not a good comparison. I will probably continue to put runflats on them because none of them have spares and my wife and daughter drive them. The last thing I need is them stuck somewhere with a flat. When I first got my wife her X6 (our first with car with runflats) I swear it was like she was trying to run over nails, went through three tires in the first two months because back then they wouldn't patch runflats (I had purchased the warranty through Discount Tire so they were all replaced free.)

One of the best decisions I ever made with my X5 was ditching run flats. They will be going bye bye on the X2 at some point in the future as well. Unless you have a history of getting serious flat tires (like '2-second flats i.e. blowouts, sideway tears etc) or perhaps travel across vast stretches of desolate highway in austere climates, most people can do without them. I go years & years without getting a nail or whatnot in a tire. Wife not so much, but even with her, it's always a slow-leak kinda thing that can be handled without putting on a spare even if we one on whatever vehicle we have a leaky tire on. I carry a plug kit & a can of fix-a-flat. If either of those won't do the job roadside assistance will take it from there, although I've never had to go that route (& I drive a lot between work, commuting, & pleasure driving).
