Spotify app disappeared and update problem 2018 X1
I have a 2018 X1 with the small screen. Spotify has always been flakey with the car app but does work with restrictions. A few days ago the app disappeared and although I can still play Spotify via Bluetooth in the car, even the limited Spotify functionality is missed. Anyone else noticed this and fixed it? I am thinking it's due to a recent Spotify update?
Another odd thing is that trying to self help, I rolled back the media update I installed a few months back. That didn't work. Trying to reinstate by downloading the same update file from BMW/update gives me UPD11024.bin a 44.31 MB file but the file , (via USB) is not recognised by the car? I'm doing something wrong but what? |

Update ( to self?). Discussed the mystery of the Spotify app no longer being a available in my UK 2018 X1 idrive 6.
The help desk informed me today that due to numerous problems with the app experience by drivers of 2018 to 2020 manufactured Cars, BMW have 'pulled support of the Spotify app for Android users and expect to do the same with Apple soon'. Sounds odd to me and the app is still shown as available in my Connected drive app hub and even the help desk chap stated that customers should have received a letter announcing the service downgrade. Oh well, still got Bluetooth but no hands free. |

The Spotify app have always had a lot of issues with Android phones. Never had an issue with my iPhone, though. If BMW are pulling support off the app, that's a big thing though. No Android Auto (no CarPlay as well for many cars) and no BMW Connected apps wtf ? Might as well have given us an audio cassette player.

Even less of them about.
That is the way to go if no Hard Drive in the car.

A possible alternative
Hey guys!
I've got a possible alternative to Spotify removing official support for Android. I've discovered this project recently and started helping out - https://github.com/hufman/AndroidAutoIdrive hufman is trying to bring as much of the Android Auto features here. Currently it works with Spotify (pretty great integration!), any other media apps (YouTube, YouTube Music, etc.) and also provides nice features such as viewing phone notifications and Google Assistant integration. Check it out! Future planned features also include MapBox integration (https://github.com/hufman/AndroidAutoIdrive/issues/43) for folks like me with no navi 😅 I've been helping out with some UI work and bug reports, feel free to jump in with suggestions/feedback! |

Pretty comprehensive instructions and I might just give it a go. As I understand it this connection method does not install or otherwise screw up the car's own media interface, so if not connecting via the phone with the software installed, the car media interface works as standard for the model? Also noted the issue with Spotify recent updates will hinder the search ability, so needing to run an earlier version or no hands free?

The latest release (released today ) works just fine with the latest Spotify version, as it gets the data through the API instead of the old method, which used some hacky stuff. Edit: Forgot to mention, you can download the APK straight from here - https://github.com/hufman/AndroidAutoIdrive/releases no need to follow the compilation/build instructions (unless you want the optional Google Maps support) |

I’ve not had any difficulty using Spotify (free version) at any time in my 2018 X1, via Connected Drive from my iPhone XR, including an update to the Spotify app a few days ago.

Regarding Google Maps, I don't think you'll find any build online, as you need an API key (like a "right to use") from Google, which costs money for each request. 😟 I'll let you know when the Mapbox integration arrives |

On iOS it seems that the Spotify app kept the integration. For us Android folks though, it seems we've been left out in the cold.

I have a 2016 X1 F48 with the bigger screen. Just signed up to Spotify recently.
Am I correct in saying the only way to get this to work on the idrive is 1. Connect iphone with USB 2. Open the BMW connected app on phone 3. Open spotify from within that 4. Select BMW Connected on the idrive 5. Select spotify from there? By doing this, it opens the Spotify full screen and lets you "favourite" songs etc. Is there a quicker way of doing it? |
