Extended Factory Warranty?

I’m sure a few of you with 2019 models will be in a similar position as me. My 2019 X2 M35i will be out of warranty in Feb 2023. I barely drive the car (11,000 miles), always let it warm up before significant throttle, and have never had to take it in for even a minor problem.

I’m inclined not to get a bmw factory extended warranty because I’ll probably only keep the car for another year (max 14,000 miles). Anyone have any horror stories at low mileage that might make me think twice? I assume this topic will become more significant as these cars age.

I’m almost out of warranty. I just crossed 38k.
I bought my ‘19 in January of 2021. It only had 3800 miles.

Mine is up in May and I won't be buying an extended warranty. In most cases the house wins on these bets. However if it gives you peace of mind, go for it and ignore us internet folks. Another strategy is to take the money you would have spent and put it aside as a hedge against future repairs. Again the extended warranty is not for routine maintenance. As a point of reference I have just under 20,000 miles on mine (40 miles short) nothing major has gone wrong and I still love the car. I have yet to find another car that checks as many boxes for me as the M35.

Good luck and stay safe

If the warranty is transferable and you're selling it yourself after those 14k miles, well, maybe it would help the sale. A little. Otherwise fuhgeddaboutit. MHO.

I'm inclined just to let it lapse under the assumption that a repair in the next year has a low probability of exceeding the cost of a three year option. Good call on resale though - it would be a benefit if someone is selling private party. I'll most likely be trading in on a new X1 M35i though.

The most likely high-cost job is the brakes, but at 11K miles it's incredibly unlikely you'll need them. If you were at 30K miles, then some of the extended warranty plans actually compete with that job, though.

Trading it in? Definitely not.

Hi , I’m a CPO 2018 X3 30i owner and I’m just stalking this forum. My warranty is also getting ready I expire in June. So we were looking into extended warranties through the dealership. We were offered a variety of different monthly and mileage type 3rd party warranties. The one that they offered would pro-rate the difference of the total cost and refund you the difference if you were to sell or trade your car . Maybe worth looking into.

Thanks for all of the thoughts guys. Decided to let it lapse. Didn't make sense to purchase given the mileage and my intention to trade in within a year.

I'm in the same boat but I plan to keep mine. Still under lease which expires in August. Things can still change but I am more than 80% sure I'll keep it long term so I'm starting to look at extended warranties. I'd prefer something that BMW offers so the service is seamless rather than thru a 3rd party. I know it's $$$ but I just want the peace of mind.

By the way I have 2020 M35i and less than 9k miles

I figured there was a good reason why the dealership repeatedly offered me an extended warranty when placing my order. Of course I passed.

Edit: Jesus. I just realized I've had my M35 for almost 4 years. Yay~~~

Just got out of service for my 2020 X2 with 33,500 miles on it. I had been waiting for this day since I got the car. $6500 in warranty work later...that's warranty price (on BMW) NOT retail price which would have been around $9K was performed on my car.
Faulty steering column issue
busted and leaking engine mount
oil Change
Spark plugs
random filters
Software update

And I baby this car, I drive it super mellow and my commute to work is 2 miles.

Needless to say I will not be keeping the car past 50K miles. Hell no. Love it but will trade in for sure. This has already been THE most expensive car I have every had to maintain so far costing me $2k. That's the service plan cost, plus a front brake pad replacement before I had the plan. Amazing vehicle, but you pay for it!

Wow! That sucks !
I’m at 38k on my ‘19. Front pads replaced under maintenance plan at 22k I believe. Haven’t done plugs. I’m probably going to do them myself at 50k. This has been the cheapest bmw i have had to maintain.

My biggest expense has been a winter wheel/tire setup and before that getting rid of the runflats for goflats.

Dealer quoted me $5k for coverage up to 2027 or 100k miles but doesn't cover wear and tear items like door seals, weather sealing, suspension parts, etc. Covers most powertrain components. Not sure about engine mounts tho.

Might be better off just squirreling money every month to cover repairs. I'm still good until next year anyway. We'll see...
