Same problem with Transmission error on my X1 F48 from 2016. I went to BMW service and they told me that I need to change complete shifter which is of course coming with high price…

Any updates on how the goodwill would work? I am a lady and have no idea how to do all this handy repair. I went to the service center today with the same error and quoted me $2500 to replace the gear shifter and $260 for diagnostic fee. On top of that they also said one of the motor mount had broke, another $1600. 2017 X1 xdrive 44k miles. Is this normal?

BMW Shift Lever 420106
Having searched the internet, I can see that the 420106 Gear Shift issue is pretty widespread. This is a factory-caused defect and BMW should be recalling the cars. I'm in the US and have filed a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration). They have already received complaints about this and the more they get, the more likely it will be that they will force a recall. If you reside in the US and are experiencing this issue, please contact the NHTSA and file a complaint by visiting their website at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or calling them at 888-327-4236. They are nice to work with and filing a complaint will only take a few minutes.

Hi mate, this a common problem on F46 and the minis too. Not just F48. I have done the repair an all three by now and must say the X1 is the hardest in terms of amount of screws and connectors ease release. Good luck and I'm here if you need help. |

Well, I figured I’d get this error at some point, almost 50k miles on the dot and here we go. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread, I knew exactly what it was when the problem presented and didn’t freak out.
Warranty has been extremely unresponsive, assuming it stays that way I’ll just tackle the issue myself. The only thing I’m unclear on is whether I should buy a new spring for $10-20 or just follow the video guide and unwind the current spring one revolution. Seems like both solutions work. It’ll probably be a few weeks until I get around to it, heading to the Pikes Peak Hillclimb soon, but I’ll report back with how it goes! |
