Air intake test part 1 for m35i
So I decided to piece together an intake since nobody has one available. Here is a picture, I'm posting from my phone so I'll probably edit this later. I think it's pretty decent, but it did not yield a noticeable increase in sound for me so that's a big negative. If I manage to get dyno time I'll throw it on to see any increase in hp and think about it again. I was talking to someone in the UK with an x2 28i and he said his k&n had the right slot MAF so in theory I think it should fit ours and we would be good to go. All the pictures show the MAF plug so if someone on here has it and can confirm that would be great to know.

I've installed a BMS intake on my 28i and it came with everything to accommodate the upgrade including the MAF sensor. Images are available on my old thread: https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1526064
I didn't notice an increase in power, but more so an increase in hearing the engine and turbo. I think the most significant difference I found was when I chipped the car to adjust the boost. |

Thanks! I did read your post back in the day... Even looking at your pictures it looks like the slotted MAF.. but why bms is saying it won't fit is beyond me. I'm having horrible trouble reaching anyone there, one reply which was try your luck.. But when promoted with extra questions on the sensor size it's been silent. The turbo sucking in is just only a little louder and only when my window is open. I'm going to send you a pm to see if you don't mind looking closer at the intake and MAF..

The BMS Intake for the X1 B48 Engine is the one that I purchased and fits perfect with my 28i. https://burgertuning.com/products/bm...58-b48-b46-bmw
I was in contact with BMS and they explained to me that the fitment will be perfect. The oval shape you can see from the images slots in perfectly with the stock O-rings for the MAF sensor. I'll upload pictures in a bit and send you the links. I can hear the turbo spooling through my music as well as engine revs (no active sound installed and stock downpipe and exhaust). The only real change I did was get the BMS chip for the car and up my boost. I remember taking off the intake before the chip because it didn't yield any improvement over the stock intake other than some engine sound. |

Well you saved me from having to upload my images. The X1 does share the same MAF sensor from the X2 28i but not the M35. It looks like you'll have to wait until they make something but what I do find off is that Real OEM is listing the MAF unit for the M35i as the one shared by the X1/X2 28i: https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=13_2071

Looking at another M35 03/2019 year build and it looks like they did change the MAF sensors. Here is a list of other cars that use the MAF sensor which will line up with an adapter for an intake.

Thanks for that list.. I'm unsure what it means, it says superseeded by 13628583496 which comes up as the m35i size .. but that list has things like the X1 F48 which we know for sure it doesn't fit. A lot of mini's have the same engine, but I am also worried about the wrong MAF sensor since I've been trying to look at people's pictures and it looks to me as the round style. I do know a lot of mini's have that slot MAF as a part # but can't confirm. When I did research I found that a lot of other manufacturers use this style which is called a "hitachi slot style MAF" which is good because then I could build the intake pipe.
My thoughts on my build so far are: 1) there doesn't look like a good place to mount a "bracket" to hold the air filter more steady, which I could always try and see if it starts wearing a hole somewhere. 2) It would be nice to make the shroud that the K&N filter comes with. I could probably dabble with sheet metal to make it, however it starts to become a time suck vs money. BMS is $179 for the setup, but the MAF plug is wrong. I'm sure there is another part with the right slot, but nobody is being helpful to even give me a few minutes to figure it out. K&N has a setup for $232 but it has the shroud.. wrong MAF hole, unless some 28i's have the square vs rectangle. There doesn't seem to be an option for different styles. |

The plumbing on these BMS filter bases seems kind of close to the neck, to me. Usually the MAF is recessed a little ways down the intake pipe/airbox assembly, and has a diffuser screen in front of it to smooth the flow. Such design leads to more accurate metering. The BMS filter seems to just stick the MAF out in the direct opening of the filter. What's down there between the filter output and the MAF? |

Do you think that the velocity stacks are a plus/must? The manufacturer that I ordered my MAF from can supply the right tube with the grid in the way. The factory box does not have anything, so even if the air flow is more, why add/change it? I haven't quite decided which direction I'm going.. but I the setup that I put together has about a 4" length, the sensor sits in the right place. There seems to be no great place to put a brace for the filter, although I don't see it bouncing around that much (and a lot of other filters do not have a brace).
When you look up the part #from BlueX2 you can see it is the same hitachi sensor and some mini's do in fact have it now. Their intake piping is different, however, so I can't really use it. I poked around a little more, and the mini's also have the same K&N part number that references back to the MAF of the right size.. and sadly it also references back to the X1 2.0L Gas but again.. since I have an X1 in the garage there's no way unless you can specify a different MAF mount which there is not (or there's an adapter plate of some sort). |

Well I guess I should say first that I doubt there is a gain in purely the filter. To test, the best method would be to put a manometer below the stock filter, inside the airbox just at the opening to the MAF. If it reads any vacuum at WOT well then maybe.
For sound, that will require getting the plastic pipe from airbox to turbo replaced with something that doesn't muffle it. At that point, getting the airbox out of there will make the turbo more audible. But unlikely to see much HP (1 or 2 at most). |

I actually thought the same thing for the noise. To be loudest I would have to replace the entire tubing from the throttle body to the intake. The problem first is that they used those funky crimp clamps .. and mine is conveniently not accessible, so I would actually have to figure out a way to cut that thing off before I could get the tubing off! Then if I could get an aluminum pipe with the right bend all the way it would be awesome. I saw similar designs with the mini's, but they have an extra tubing outlet that does not look to be present in the m35i. I tried to be geeky and calculate the surface area differences, but I know my calculation has flaws. The only way would be for me to dyno it... and since right now it's not a lot more audible I may just leave it stock.

Thought I would update this post... I still am rocking my intake tube setup. I have thrown a code which I can't remember off the top of my head for too much air flow once in a while.. maybe once a month. It is a "tuner" code so you can really ignore it. No other bonuses but more crackles and pops from the car. I have yet to hit the dyno, but one of these days.
I just thought I would add, however, about water in the engine bay. I kept all the snorkels and hookups, as well as the bottom of the stock box. A couple weeks ago we were hit with torrential flooding rain and I did manage to drive home in sometimes zero visibility on the highway, as well as hit some HUGE rivers of water. I did check the car when I got home for any signs of damage or pieces ripped off, but all was well. Out of curiosity I was wondering how much water actually would make it into the engine bay and not evaporate from the engine's super hot temp. There was actually a little bit of splashed water in miscellaneous places that could have come from the bottom, or perhaps the intake. Either way, not enough to bother the intake at all. I wonder, however, with the stock sealed box to the intake snorkel if it would/could have sucked any more water directly in. |

Thanks GAMA.. IND just literally posted about their intake a couple of days ago here in the forum. A very pretty looking piece indeed.... but it's price point is too much luxury at this point for me.

I just uploaded a clip of the engine bay noise.. which is muted a bit by the phone.. but no night and day difference. Sorry no stock videos, I may have to do that one of these days. |

It's a bit confusing to find.. the new sizes are a little off.. and the air filter was a generic 3.5" filter from ebay. Note when you're browsing MAF tubes the slot style filter is on a LOT of other cars. |

I wouldn't call $87.95 too expensive.. with that and a $20 cone air filter I am rocking a $175 BMS cone intake. Yes I would have hoped the intake tube could be cheaper, but it is custom welded I would say and not mass produced.
