X1 snapped steel

Edited for sake of brevity. Broken coil from impact of pothole. Also damaged strut and wheel bearing.

Wow that’s crazy. Not sure I’ve ever seen that happen! … how long ago did you buy it? Assuming you have no warranty, a new OEM spring might be $2-300 plus one or two hours labor.

I think they would. I guess it depends on dealership but I feel like my dealership would.

Do you think the dealership and Indy have these parts in stock as it probably isn’t a common repair? I have an appointment with a dealership tomorrow morning. The bmw dealership I originally bought it from says they don’t have appointments until next week. I’m thinking Indy shop is the way to go so I don’t get screwed with the BS diagnostic fee. Just nervous it’s a part they have to order. I live in the northeast which is pot hole city and roads are caked in salt .. I’m feeling it will be a tough case to win for goodwill reimbursement based on those factors
Are you towing it there? Im not sure it’s safe to drive.

This repair is pretty straight forward - 2 hours tops. I have no idea what going labor rates are but I’d guess about $150/hr at BMW and $100/hr at Indy?

I’ve never seen a spring fail like this so I would guess that it’s not something they keep in stock but that’s just a guess.

I’m assuming you mean 2 hours per side as they generally would change both out. So 4 hours total. I’m sure they are will do an alignment as well and knowing my luck will find other damage. I did notify my insurance company as its pothole season and I’ve hit a few at night. I have collision so it’s covered over my deductible amount. I also figure if it’s at bmw dealer even though I didn’t buy it from them maybe they can get bmw na to help out.
Yea you will need an alignment, didn’t think about that. I personally do not think they need to change both sides. It should take them no longer than one hour for the corner but the book probably says to charge 2.

You really need to replace both springs at the same time. Any reputable dealer will tell you that. If you only do one it is quite probable that the other one is ready to go as well.

Have you ever seen a spring "go"? I haven't. Especially on a car so young.

This is actually more common than you would think. In the Volvo world the 2000's S40s were notorious for OEM springs breaking on fronts and rears.

On the 2000 era 3 series it was very common to have them crack.. and sure a large enough pothole could probably do the damage shown. I had to do them on the backs for my father's 2003 Xi , but it's still kicking around and drives mint! I agree it would be good best practices to change both springs at the same time if anything just so they will settle properly, and maybe the batch that was used did have a defect.. I'd certainly rather have 2 new ones than wait if/when the other may fail. The car is pretty darned new but should be able to get a new spring relatively fast.

Imho, this is road damage and not indication of flaw and valid warranty claim, spring steel is normally more brittle than steel which will deform and a pothole will place huge stress on the part. Make sure you replace both springs, they do not have to be genuine BMW part but get good quality, replacing one spring only will affect ride balance, tracking and ultimately ride quality. Check shock absorber also, it will have been hammered hard when the coil snapped. Hope final bill not too painful.

I've just had front driver's spring do exactly same as the photo. I was changing from winter to the summer wheels, when I jacked the car up and took the weight off the spring it broke. The spring dropped down between the wheel and suspension strut, jamming the wheel from rotating. Had to load onto a low loader with a skate under the wheel; a nerve racking experience!

It could have been quite dangerous if travelling at the time it decided to break.

I've arranged for both springs to be replaced by local garage at £240. When I called the garage they said strange we're working on another F48 with exactly the same issue!

That just happened in my x1 f48 last week . Insurance declined the claim as it is “mechanical fracture” of the spring they said .

Reading at this thread, it seems like this is common with x1 f48? That’s scary what if I was driving on a high speed .

Now , since It also damage The strut assembly , I am thinking of changing all 4 to aftermarket Bilstein B6 . What springs would you guys recommend? Does eibach and Hr springs lowers the car? I dont wanna change the ride height but i don't want to purchase stock coil spring again , it might snap again ? Stocks has low quality springs maybe ?

Thanks!

BMW X1 2019 right front coil spring snapped

wow, I have had the exact same thing happened this morning.
Just got my car out the driveway this morning, no pothole, just a loud clank, and something fell down.
To my surprise its a coil spring, never thought it could happen.
And I only have 30, 000 miles on this 2019 X1.
