Noisy Braking from High Speed
When I brake firmly (but not panic) on the highway at high speed (~60-75mph or ~100-120km/hr), it feels rough and is noisy.
At lower speeds (below ~60mph or ~100km/hr) braking is smooth and quiet. Has anyone experienced this? My car is 2018 X1 F48 with ~12,000 miles/~19,000km. |

You apply more force on the pedal at higher speed so whatever is causing it is louder. The usual suspects are edge corrosion round disc(rotor), grit or foreign object contamination in pads or pad wear.

It could also be the ABS system kicking in if you are using heavy pedal pressure, because of way the ABS unit functions. If that is the case, it's quite normal.

I have similar issues but my quiet breaking is < 45mph. I've already has the pads and rotors replaced once and it came back only a few thousand miles later. I suspect it's sub-quality parts or a design problem. This is probably one of my largest complaints about the car and my passengers notice it as well which is embarrassing.

There is a fix for another brake problem ie squeal. Copper grease between the shim and the rear of the pad. To prevent grit and water build up between pad and disc(rotor), two hacksaw blades together make a horizontal cut in the pad material to form a channel for water and grit. This may also resolve this problem.

I went in for service and replaced all brake pads and rotors ... OUCH!
They said there was some rust on the rotors and they do not machine rotors, only replace them. |

I think the X1 is heavier on brakes because mine in eco mode coasts when I let my foot off the throttle. You can watch the rev counter drop to idle as it coasts then goes up as I apply throttle. The result is I brake more often to keep within the speed limit and approach other vehicles as the engine braking is absent. Its got to attract greater brake wear.

The problem with my brakes was not really the pads, but the rotors. They said there was 5mm left on the pads, which is still ~40% left before triggering the brake sensors. They do not replace only the rotors without replacing the pads.
I only put on ~4,000 km/2,500 mi since buying the 1-year used car. The car may have sat for sale during the Toronto winter, hence rust buildup. I could have left them and driven anyway, but I don't like the feeling of noisy brakes. |

Mine was in for service just over a month ago at 18,000mls (c28800km) and the service report said that I still have around 5mm remaining on the pads and discs/rotors all OK too.

I do notice that my brakes are much smoother now ... they were grabbing before. Hopefully, I'll get more mi/km by not letting the car sit over winter.
