Auto dimming mirror

I wonder if anyone out there would be able to help I made the mistake of not ordering my 2017 X1 with an auto dimming interior mirror and regret it, is it possible to retrofit the auto dim type without a major strip out ?

Just spin the plastic nob and it will be dim. I know not the same, but better than nothing.

Thanks I have found that the led alarm lens when twisted sets the mirror to dim but it's too stiff to turn easily whilst driving ?.

Yes it is slightly stiff, but once you master the two finger technique, you will soon do it with ease!

Hi, not your mistake - its the mistake of BMW diluting the brand by wanting more cash for something that is free on a Skoda and assumed to be a given on a so-called premium car.

I believe the part number for the auto dimming mirror is 9256135 for my f48, would any one with experience know if this is a plug and play install or an additional wiring job please?

Hello, newbie here!

Old thread, I know...but I'm trying to retrofit my '17 X1 with the electrochromic interior rearview mirror (part #51169345386). Can anyone confirm if this is a plug and play install? I'm having two wires coming from the harness vs four on the electrochromic mirror. I'm guessing I'll have to buy a new harness, but I'd greatly appreciate if anyone would shed some light on this. Thanks in advance!

I have never looked into OE BMW units, but in one of my past VW cars I swapped out for one as they were not offered.

I bought a Gentex model online, which is one of the main creators for most dimming mirrors around the world. That car did not have homelink buttons so I got a model with them. I ran the wiring into the headliner and tapped into the power from the lights on top. All in all, a pretty simple process. BMW OE parts tend to be pretty pricy. Going Gentex direct may or may or not be a cost savings.

Yes. The (turn the knob) dimming mechanism is utterly dreadful! Not even worthy of a Wartburg (Soviet Union era crap car)!!

The one I bought is Gentex. I was really hoping it was a plug & play thing, since driving at night can be a real PIA for me.

If it is not an OEM direct replacement there will be a little tinkering involved no matter what. Pretty simple overall, or you can take to a shop for install.

Bought this one on eBay for our 2020 X1.
2018 2019 BMW M2 Rear View Mirror w/ Auto Dimming OEM LKQ Gentex E11026661
Homelink + Compass. Same make as the one from the factory but our X1 didn't come with Homelink and Compass.
It was a 15min swap, all 4 wires were present already on the cable to all I did was pry the cover, slide down the mirror and replace with the new one. Done.
Works great.
