Arghhh. BMW refuses to list coolant type. Anyone know?
BMW is getting ridiculous in withholding basic maintaince information.
The latest is coolant. Is regular ethyl glycol okay? They don't even say in the owners manual. And, what, please, is the capacity? They don't say that either! Last edited by Skip2017; 09-19-2020 at 04:27 PM.. |

BMW obviously recommend their own G48 coolant for the F48 X1. The details of coolants are available here. The part number for a 1.5 litre bottle is 83 51 2 355 290. I must admit I've only ever topped up with the genuine BMW stuff. I paid £10 years ago for a 1.5l bottle from eBay, as it was the same coolant for my older E61 engine, and it's still going. However I've not done a full coolant change, only very occasional top ups. It looks like the full capacity is between 6.4 and 6.6 litres, and BMW recommend a 1:1 mix of coolant and water. There's also a specific bleeding process for the cooling system after filling. I'm getting all this from the TIS website linked above

I recently bought 4 x 1.5 litre bottles from CotswoldBMW cost around £44 so not gone up much (amazingly). We have had the Z3 for 8 years and never touched the coolant , so decided to change it.

Just get the BMW concentrate-it's about half the price of the aftermarket options: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...n/82141467704/
Just get a gallon of distilled water, and you'll have 2 gallons for the price of one gallon of the Zerex or other alternatives. The OEM fluids aren't always more expensive! If you're changing out the coolant, note that the procedure is pretty involved:https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...check/CNCeB76L I a venturi pump (works awesome) but there's an additional procedure you have to go through to price the electronic pump, detailed above. |

I've only changed the coolant on my e82 and I bought a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water and it was more than enough to fill the car. Also FWIW you can google "BMW coolant MSDS" And it should find the manufacturer safety data sheet and you'll know what's in it. As I'm sure it's shipped from somewhere, it's a requirement to have the msds for shipping so there's probably one floating around on the internet. I found the below: http://www.worldpac.com/tagged/bmw_antifreeze.pdf I was under the impression the coolant for bmw was alcohol, water and some additives to keep the plastic and rubber seals conditioned but based on the above it might also have ethylene glycol. Also the coolant at the dealer in the US was usd 22 per gallon In jersey for my e82. I expect the x1 uses the same coolant but I'm not 100% sure. |
