CPO sDrive18d - advice and thoughts

Hi Guys,

Back at the start of December I was in an accident and managed to write off my beloved Mazda 2014 CX-5, largely due to cost of respraying (gold base and multiple layers of red tinted lacquer).

I like the raised driving position of an SUV and due to budget constraints CPO was the only way forward, and knowing the reputation of used BMWs from my fathers experiences with them. I had tried the original X1 but found it quite small on the inside, but from my desperate quick reading to try and get sorted with a vehicle, understand the F48 is quite a bit more comfy inside.

Any hints and tips from you guys? Spec wise one thing I had to have from my Mazda was the reversing camera, which is quite rare in my price banding on any car other than a RAV4 (did look at a whole range of alternatives), and front parking sensors.

Ended up plumping for a sDrive18d in sunset orange with the parking assist and reversing camera, and the 8 speed automatic. Any hints and tips for adjusting as for the last nearly 25 years I've only driven manual cars?

Any must have accessories? (Coming with mats I've been told - as official CPO from BMW hoping it's official mats).

Many thanks for any advice or pointers,

Alex

I bought the genuine rubber boot cover after I ruined the boot floor. Spills are a nightmare to clean off that material, and bikes and baby strollers will destroy it easily.

Once your left foot searches for a pedal and it finds one, it will press it to the full extend which is not optimal in an automatic. Hence take of your left shoe while driving until you get used to automatic.

For anyone else, You can retrofit a reversing camera to an auto F48 very easily, I provide link below . The vendors actually claims to fit these for several BMW main dealers. It took me 3 hours to install but there are specialist fitters. Cost has now dropped to approx £300. The retrofit looks and works in an identical manner to factory. The retro fit can be set to work with 6.5. 8.8 and 10.25 central displays. It was one of the best retrofits, I did and detailed instructions included numerous pictures are included on a usb. The retrofit ran flawlessly for 18 months and was still trouble free when I sold the car. Interestingly the dealer told me he gave an additional part—ex on the car because it is such a desirable feature. I would not be without the reversing camera, because it has a wide angle lens it provides a large viewing area and improves safety significantly.

I have driven auto and manual (stick shift) cars interchangeably for many years although I now prefer automatics (age and type of car being main factor). I would suggest that within a few days you will have fully adapted (although you may once in a while still try and change gears manually ). The main point is to remember to keep your left foot tucked away for the first few weeks, drive as you would normally using accelerator/gas and brake pedals. Because automatic are easier to drive, it is an easy conversion and like riding a bike you will still be able to manage a manual gearbox in the future. . Have fun and welcome to the forum.

Is that why I love that Mazda Red so much? (perhaps a hint of Orange in it) - in my opinion the best colour I have ever seen on a production car

All previous advice is good - got to keep that left foot away from the pedals or you will be eating the steering wheel. There is a nice footrest there for a reason. The 8 speed Aisin gearbox is really good so you are being spoilt if this is your first automatic - enjoy.

It's a stunning red but pretty unique for a standard car colour in that it's not a single layer but built up over multiple layers - did add considerably to cost to repair.

I agree and next recommended purchase are the genuine rubber (all weather) floor mats. The genuine items have a rim around the edge so they do not just stop mud getting into the carpet but also stop the dust/sand creeping over the edge. The genuine rubber mats can be easily removed and jet washed or scrubbed clean. My carpets looked like new after 3 years despite country walks most days.

Could not agree more, I did quite a lot of research and the quality of the OEM rubber matts are far superior over aftermarket options.

Good stuff! I would say as MJE60 mentioned, if you're in the countryside and/or exposed to a lot of rain or mud, to get the interior all weather floor matts too. That said, it's not so bad since you should have matts already inside the cabin.

Be sure to check that they are actually made from rubber. I bought a set of BMW interior mats from my supplying BMW dealer, thinking they would be similar to those I had in my previous Q3, which certainly were made of rubber.
Those in my X1 do have the advantage of the raised edges, but the downside I find is that small bits of grit etc find their way over the edge and gather around the base of the accelerator pedal. The upshot is that I regularly have to take them out and vacuum behind the pedal and also at the base of the foot rest by the front centre console. The mats are of a fairly stiff compound and from just having a look at the reverse of one of mine, it says they are manufactured from <TPE>. Wikipedia tells me that is a physical mix of polymers (usually a plastic and a rubber). Still better though than wearing out the factory fitted carpet mats!

The OEM carpets are indeed made of TPE, I bought them also.
But the problem with them is that they are very slippery.
I tried with a lot of shoes, but everyone of them slipped over the carpets face.

Ah. Did you take out the original carpet mats before fitting the new ‘rubber’ ones. The originals, in the front only, are attached by two circular velcro pads on the base floor and the new mats also have Velcro circles to affix them, which should remove the tendency for them to move under your feet. The Velcro fastenings are quite secure and need a firm, but steady pull to remove the mats.

Maybe you didn't carefully read my post... the shoes slipped over the surface (face) of the TPE mats. The new mats was properly fixed on the car floor, they didn't slipped at all.
And, of course, I taken out the original carpets before fitting the TPE ones. 🤣

Moreover, the right foot heel didn't have any stable fixing point when driving and that was the second big issue that lead me to return the TPE mats.
Finally I found a non-OEM pair of mats, that check all the poins for me: made for X1 F48, raised edges, no smell, no slippery, easy clean. The price for all four mats was around 30 €.
After two years they are still in very good condition.

Yes, you’re correct, but the reason I mentioned that was because I had a call a while back from a friend who’d bought a set of mats for his new X1 and wondered why the driver side mat moved around. It turned out he’d simply put the mats over the top of the factory fit carpet mat, not realising about the Velcro fasteners.
Having said that, I am surprised your feet would slip around on the surface of the rubber mat because that’s never occurred to me with any footwear over almost three years. Good though that you’ve found some that are ok for you.

Thanks for all the comments guys,

Quick query - car is listed with this as standard:

Active Guard incl speed limiting and lane departure functions with auto steering, and front collision warning with brake intervention

Googling to try and identify how the lane departure and auto steering works?

Keep reading as waiting for mine to be transported down from Scotland, no news yet.

As doing so much reading on the F48 and think only have the standard speakers also looking at options for upgrading the speakers, considering coaxial initially for fronts (move to rear doors eventually) as a first step, can always look at the tweeter housing and components at a later date, having said that haven't heard the sound yet - curse of buying remotely.

Many thanks

Alex

Will try and post some pictures here if get the chance,

Well went and collected my X1 - certainly odd to buy a car online without even sitting in the current version of it.

Really pleased - drove back 50 miles and once seats set up was nice and comfortable - ate the miles up (including M25), still figuring out all the toys. Really pleased it scans the road and then displays speed limit from signs including the overhead ones.

Sadly a dark and wet day, although must say having read reviews about how the X1 can be noisy on the motorway at 70 - I have to say didn't find the noise bad at all, and although only a quick go with DAB radio the standard sound didn't seem bad at all even with just the 4 basic speakers.

Anyhow - some photos from collection:
