Code P0446 - EVAP VENT CONTROL CIRCUIT FAILURE
I own a 2017 X1. Got this code a month or so before corona. COVID-19 is nasty but I don't think it caused this code. Any idea what did?
The vehicle ran normally before and after the code appeared, and continues to run normally. It seemed to show up around the time after my key fob required a batter change, but I really don't want to go down a rabbit hole thinking it has anything to do with that - unless it does for some crazy reason. This was the only link I found related to the problem for BMW: https://www.carobdcodes.com/bmw-p044...formance.shtml My vehicle will not pass inspection until this code is resolved. Thanks for any thoughts you might have! |

Have you spoken to a dealer yet? It might be simple, it might not! A simple phone call may get the problem solved.

Thanks for the replies!
The link is a good one. And I did call BMW tech who said it is most likely the valve in a line coming out of the gas tank. But they'd have to diagnose to know for sure, i.e., supply power to the valve to see if it fails to open or not. That diagnosis alone is pushing $150. If the valve is faulting, replacing it with a new one is pushing another $400 to $500 (ballpark estimate). It could also very well be electrical, which I would think could be much less $ to fix. Anyway, they don't see this code often with the X1. |

It just happened that today, on my way back from home improvement store, I noticed the engine light was OFF! Maybe a fluke. I'll check it tomorrow. Been driving my other car past several days now that it's nice out. No idea if the X1 just sitting there cleared something but I was cautiously optimistic. I had looked into a shop next to my normal one that works on European cars and has a "smoke gun" tool to see if the valve opens properly... But maybe I'll just try to get it inspected next month, if the engine light continues to stay off by then! Cuz driving the car seems to have zero effect from the code... |

Happened to me as well. It came and then gone and then came and the. Pretty much stayed. I tried to reset it with OBD diagnostics app but it would come back again.

I recently installed a dash cam hardwired into my 2018 x1 in the 104 fuse location, and since then whenever i go to fuel up the pump keeps clicking off on me which leads me to think it is something to do with my vent valve. any ideas on what could help determine the fuse which is conected to the vent valve to try replace it and see if this fixes the issue before i try uninstalling my dashcam before finally going to a dealership

Just had this issue occur on my 2016 F48, it’s only the P0446 that presents.. I tried a new gas cap and that wasn’t it.. chased down an electrical issue as my obd tool kept telling me that my battery had low voltage, replaced the battery and no change BUT when I was working under the hood I got some really strong fuel vapors. I looked up fuel TSB’s for the MY in the US and BINGO! TSB B010419 covers the issue and BMW even extended the warranty to 10 years/120k miles (This only covers 2016 and very early build 2017 models however). I took it to the dealer where they had quoted me several hundred dollars in goose chase diagnostics and they were quite surprised that I had found the TSB and warranty, I told them to only look into the fuel valve and guess what? That was the issue.. saved myself a boatload!
Try this first if you only have the P0446 code! Good luck! |

Hello,
I'm having the same issue as the original poster. I'm trying to do the replacement myself but cannot locate the fuel tank vent on my 2016. I can't find any videos or walkthroughs for a newer X1. Any help would be appreciated. I was going to take it to the dealership with that TSB but apparently it will not apply in AZ. |

If I'm getting P0446 with a P0440, would it still be the same issue? I am doing some googling and if there are both, It might be the valve itself I need to replace. Thanks! |

I changed it a couple of days ago. It's super easy (see attached), and the sensor costs ~$90.

Aww nuts, so my wife just told me and I pulled the same code. The only thing is that the part does not match yours: ours has a dual hose valve, not a single one. I verified the different part numbers and both are compatible, but definitely not the same!
13907614013 Any good way to actually troubleshoot the valve? Do you hear it click on and off? The genuine ones seems out of stock, I'm not sure if I dare use a no name part. I'll call up my dealer tomorrow and see if they have one in stock. |

To be honest, I didn't get a code. I'm troubleshooting an idle problem. The revs vary while starting the engine and don't keep at a certain level like it is supposed to. First, they go a little down to 600 RPMs (makes you believe the engine will stop) and then immediately go up higher to 1700 RPMs or so. Other than that, the car drives great. Not even the BMW service guys could diagnose my problem, so I'm changing what I read here and there that could be its root: MAF sensor, throttle body, fuel vent sensor, etc. But no luck so far .

Oof that's a real bummer.. I called my local bmw and the valve is in stock so I'm just going out the door to get it.. see if it'll make the evaporate code go away before I take the car to an expert for diagnosis.

Good luck, bud! After installing the new sensor, you know, you should probably reset the error memory using BimmerLink, BimmerCode, ISTA, etc.

A bit late to the party, but I'm attaching a helpful BMW service bulletin that I found awhile ago when I got a check engine light (I believe error code 191C02) that was pointing to a faulty tank vent valve (B46 engine).
My valve didn't have the visual defect noted in the attached document. But, the dealer did replace the vent valve under warranty as it was loose/defective. I was also able to fix a loose connector issue because I knew what it should've looked like from my own disassembly experience. Hope the attachment helps future members. |

Hello,
any luck with this issue/code? Has the same code and, so far, same results on 2016 F48. I tried aftermarket valve, but nothing changed, waiting for Saturday to inspect bottom of the car and look at canister connectors. |
