Around the time I was in grade school our phone number was 759W, and it was on a party line. Later, it was Li-3 (Liberty 3) something.

Lift the phone, wait for the operator: "Number please."

A quick Google search show that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports there were still 420,000 telephone operators working sometime in the 1970s. Seems hard to believe there were so many at that late date, but what do I know.

I practice my mom/dad's number every time I go to Vons. Still in use for the discount, no downside that they are going to track me (THAT WAY) But we were full numbers.

805.983.6xxx

I still know dad's office number, and my godfather's

But I can barely remember my tech's first name . . .

What letter is on the 1 key?

The only numbers I can remember are mine and my wife's. Thank god for my phone and the contacts list or I'd be lost.

FAculty 6, 0-8-4-6. It was a party line when I was a wee tad (the Sendecki's up the hill were ALWAYS on it). Eventually everyone got their own line, and by some odd twist of fate that number remained with my parents. They subsequently moved twice, but still kept that number. 1950 through to 2015, their number never changed. Even when they traveled in the motorhome! My dad had it forwarded to his cell.

"The doorstop" is what we called them at the dealership where I wrenched on them. The 1975-76 cars were pretty fragile but they beefed up the drivetrain substantially in 1977 and put a stronger 5-speed gearbox in place of 4-speed. I was never fond of the looks but they were fun to toss around.

I'd love to find a survivor, but like everything British Leyland made in the 1970's they are now only crumbs of rust in a dust pan.....

For me it was Pepto-Bismol.

17 minutes of colorized footage of 1896. Several cities during the "Belle Époque".

128 years ago, so all the pictured people have perished in the meantime.

5 minutes of colorized footage of New York in 1945:
