Thanks for the video. Two quick tips which may help. 1. Always remove the fill plug first just in case you can not get it out your not left with an empty diff and can not fill it. 2. A cheap hand pump would make easy work of that fill, I bought one years ago to do my diffs, it's worth its weight in gold.
Very helpful video as usual!!

Both nuts are on the diff super tight, so removing the top first is definately super important. I can only imagine removing the drain plug, then not being able to get the fill plug out |

Thanks so much for the video! Curious to get your feedback....have been told by a couple mechanics that it's unsafe to change the trans fluid after 40-50k if it hasn't been done before because the viscosity changed and the solenoids won't like new fluid.
My car has approx 60k now - in your opinion do you think I'd be at risk of damaging something if I did the fluid/filter change? any tips? |

I would definately change the fluid...your 'mechanics' are basically hittin you with the old "If it aint broke, don't fix it". With the DCT it only makes sense to change at your mileage. If you do everything correctly and refill with the proper amount and correct approved fluid, you'll be just fine. On mine I've noticed the shifts actually feel a bit better...might be placebo, but I feel that way. And changing the diff fluid as described in this thread is a BMW maintanence item every third oil change....no filters though... |

What would you recommend for diff oil?

Great video! I enjoy all of them and give you a lot of credit for taking the time to share with the rest of us.
As far as what the best gear oil is for our HAG 220 Electrically Activated M Lock rear axle final drive, (basically an electronic limited slip differential, or ELSD,) these are the four best fluids that I have found that can be had relatively easily here in the US, at least. I believe the fluid provided in BMW p/n 83222357992 is the same Castrol fluid below, but am not certain. Bottom line is, this one isn't that hard - just pick any one of the following four and rest easy; you only need 1 to 1.5L at most to drain and refill. Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75w-140 GL 5
