Clicking noise from the front wheels of G05 40i with 22" M Wheels (Axle Replacement!)
A couple of days ago as I was slowly driving out of my garage while my front drivers window was opened, I noticed a very unusual clicking noise coming from my front left wheel as I drove out. It seemed to get louder as I would slow down before a complete stop at a light or a stop sign right before fainting away. I took it to my local dealer at Irvine BMW yesterday, and they had me leave it with them to investigate the noise as well as it seems I had a few needed software updates that needed to be installed.
I just got a call from my service advisor today, that they were able to replicate the noise and determine that I needed an axle replacement! Kind of weird to experience this kind of an issue only about 4000 miles in on a brand new car. They also mentioned that because of how new the car is, the part has to be ordered from Germany and it would take about 7-10 days to arrive. I don't know if this is a common issue or just an one off situation, but I highly recommended checking to see if you hear a clicking noise from your wheels while driving with your windows down to see if you experience the same clicking noise while driving.

Yikes. I haven't heard this but I will listen. I still don't understand this talk about parts coming from Germany.... these cars are built in the US. Why aren't parts in the US?!

That was what I thought at first but my advisor specifically said that non of the major repair / replacement parts are stateside. Huge bummer since I already miss my ride and the only courtesy vehicle they had to give me was a 2019 X3 30i. Such a difference in ride quality and control over the wheel. I'm going to see if they can at least give me a different vehicle tomorrow.

The cars are built in the US, but that doesn't mean all the constituent parts are manufactured in the US. Parts are acquired from various sources and shipped to the US for assembly. In fact, if you look at your vehicle sticker, you'll see that only 25% of the X5's parts are manufactured in the US, with 50% coming from Germany.

Strangly enough, I bought my X5 40i from a dealer near Irvine (similar to OP's location) and have the same issue. It is a loaner lease. I'm not sure if this could be due to defect or loaner abuse (no break-in period).
Just to be more descriptive, my problem of this "rattle" noise happens when: 1. when I maneuver the vehicle left or right during parking 2. accelerate a little and decelerate (engine brake engages) May be I should visit the dealership whenever I get a chance. If anyone has an update please let us know! |

Yes that sounds very similar, I highly recommend for you to have your dealer look at it soon. From what my service advisor told me when I turned in my car for service, the axle needed an immediate replacement.

Hey,
So I have the same clicking sound when braking. After having the service dept look into it, there response was "as compared to other like vehicles the sound is within normal operation..." After speaking with my service advisor she suggested the shop foreman take it for a test drive with me. Did so, sound replicated, back in the shop it went. Waiting for update from service. Thanks ssadri for posting and sharing your issue. Sounds like I have the same problem |

Not sure of the production, I purchased it late Dec 30th/18. I actually think there maybe a couple of issues one being the axle and the other wheel bearings. There is clicking sound from the front when breaking and also a creaking sound coming from the rear.
