New Brakes Already...?

I'd been noticing a slight grinding noise when I backed out of my garage in the morning, but no other symptoms whatsoever. Decided to have the brakes looked at, since I do have the BBS wheels on and didn't want to find out something was rubbing due to the tight non-OEM fitment. I fully expected the "all clear and we changed your oil" phone call today, but instead I got the "your fronts need replacement and your rears are close" call. Damn, not even at 18K yet. And, as a rule, I usually go over 100K before I need brakes (which means in my 40+ years of driving I have rarely ever needed to have them done.). I do not drive this car hard at all. I know it has brakes that bite like crazy (almost too much, really), but is the trade off that you need new sets every 20K miles...?

That's scary early!!!

Anyone else get more?

I'd take your wheels off and measure the pad thickness yourself.

Pads are consumables, and easy to replace. The rotors are fine, right?

Hah, yeah I made a minor stink but I didn't want to take out my frustration on the service rep. I asked for all the parts and for them to take pics, mostly to make sure I wasn't getting the ol' scam. I thought about having my son do 'em to save a little cash, but figured time (for both of us) was more important right now.

Funny thing, I remembered that I bought a first-year Tundra about 20 years ago that ran through it's brakes really quickly. Toyota ended-up replacing and upgrading the entire system after they determined the spec was too light-duty for the design. I get that brakes are a wear-item, but I also would suggest that ours is a new application and replacement this soon is as a much a design flaw as anything else...

There's a huge thread on the X1 forums of people complaining that their brakes wore really soon like yours under the 20K. I myself literally just did the brake job for my wife's X1 and we are at 45K. Some suspect the electronics are applying brakes to stabilize the car (can't remember if it was dsc or whatever nanny the car has). It does make some sense, and obviously a huge difference in everyone's driving habits. I have a tendency for most of my cars to just flip them for new brakes anywhere from 30-40K just out of habit. Sometimes the brakes get low, sometimes there's some brake deposit shake. Since I do the brakes myself and usually get them from aftermarket suppliers the cost is so negligible and I feel happy to have new brakes. I usually also opt for the drilled/slotted rotors mainly for looks since I absolutely love the look. There's many arguments both ways if you should or should not. I find that on big heavy cars like my minivan it does decrease the frequency of the brake deposits (wobble at brake). When I first got the van it was changed at least 4 times by the dealer since it would come back every 15K or so (once a year). After changing to the drilled/slotted style it never happens until I just decide to flip over the brakes (every 2-3 years just out of habit as I said). I'm not sure which rotors/pads/size the X2 m35i will cross match to since it is a unique car, but the regular style X2 matches the X1 size.

Edit.. out of curiosity I put it into realoem and it cross references to the same rotors as the X1 and X2! I could swear the rotors should be bigger.. so it's just the caliper itself that's larger?

It's funny: I have no problem replacing tires early, since I love new rubber. But, this kinda got me twisted a bit. Maybe if I had been more aware and actually expected this to happen, it might not have even registered. I love the idea of treating brake replacement as an at-home maintenance and performance process. It's not my forte, but I could definitely get my older son to take it on. I appreciate the perspective...

How difficult was it to replace the pads yourself? Are there any specialized tools you need because we're talking BMW?

I used to do my own brake jobs 20+ years ago, but it's been awhile I admit. I can't wait to replace the pads personally, I'd love something a little less brake-dusty

I can't remember off the top of my head about special tools, but I always find that the bmws and German cars use odd sized tools..ie I'm 99% sure you'll need an 18mm socket somewhere, and at one point I only had one in my tool box so I've since bought a bunch. Nothing special though in any procedure. You will need to get bimmerlink for the parking brake service mode for the back. I didn't do it myself but I'm pretty sure you need it. I can, however, imagine you could take apart the parking brake much like a lot of Honda and volvo do... Still, easier if you already have the obdii reader.

I found this video in case that someone doesn't have the ODB reader:

He uses a Torx T45 to retract the piston (~2:47).
To access it, it's a T30 (~1:50).

My notification went off at 18K : (
Fronts were toast and I work two blocks away from my house.

$500 at dealer for just front pads SMH
Local guy wanted $425, so not really worth trying that route.

I've gone 80K plus on any of my other 7 vehicles I've owned in my life, this was just nuts!
BMW's response was: "This is your first BMW huh?"

My last 3 bmws (two e90s and an f33) all had base brakes and the rears averaged 45-50k and the fronts about 60k. My current brakes are still good at 21k.

I have 15K and am replacing tires at 4/32 will need them sooner rather than later and winter is here in the northeast. I was told I am close on brakes. Since I got the extended maintenance I will likely get them done in the spring and covered, then buy out my lease. Nothing out there right now is more exciting than what I am driving now. It suits me.

Happy Holidays everyone

My fronts are at 3/32 and rears at 5/32 at 21k miles. I’m installing new Pilot Sport All Season 4s in the morning. I think my pads are at 6mm last time I checked. Rotors look fine. Debating doing slotted rotors when it’s time. Hoping the x2 is as easy to work on as the f3x and e90 cars.

according to my service report the fronts are at 4mm and rears at 6mm and rotors are fine. I really trust the dealer's service department, they have always treated me well and gone the extra mile even when I didn't buy a car from them (first BMW). I will be sticking with the continentals that came on the car, and they match tire rack pricing including rebates so I have no complaints. I also tend to chew tires fast and brakes. back in the day I did a set of Eagle GTs on a Mazda MX-6 GT in under 10,000 miles I got longer lasting tires after that .

Had a dealer finance guy just tell me they routinely see X2 cars needing brake replacements at 20k mi. I never trust those folks but after seeing this thread & info in it, the guy might’ve not been outright lying out it.

20k on a set of pads isn’t crazy on an M or AMG product but something like X1 / 2, that’s nuts to me. If the pads are that soft you’d think wheels would be hammered with heavy brake dust all the time. Are they?

my X2 M35i wheels are always coated in brake dust. I passed 22k miles recently and so far so good. Pads looked fine when I put on the new PSAS4 tires.

You should have said "yeah and my last mofo!". 😆
Seriously though, that was a very condescending comment by BMW.

Are we talking brake pads? Or did you folks replace the rotors and sensors at less than 25k miles?
