Winter Tyres
Hi All,
Am getting my 530d delivered end of the year. I've seen a lot about ppl putting winter tyres on their cars, do I need to change my run-flats when I get it? Am in the UK (midlands) and do some early morning (6am) and evening (7pm) driving so expecting to encounter some cold roads and maybe some ice this winter but do I reallly need to change? If so, what to? Thanks in advance |

I’ve run Winters on my cars for over 5 years now and think they’re invaluable. I prefer to run runflats winters on my BMW’s coz I also find the flat tyre scenario so much more bearable with rft...

I've had BMW's back as far as before any kind of traction / anti skid assistance was invented, all RWD 6 cylinder of various diets, never got stuck yet.
Having said that now this will be the arctic winter when I come a cropper..... Guess it's a cost / benefit balance that's down to your personal situation.

Just put 20" Hankook winter tires on mine. Winter tires are a must especially if you live on a really cold area like my self. Huge difference on traction between all seasons and winter tires.

Winter tyres give far greater security in severe winter conditions. Much better for stopping, which many forget is more important than getting moving. Also remember while you are on winter tyres you are not wearing out the summer tyres, so tyre cost is similar long term. The cost is in rims, partly recovered if you sell on when you change your car, if they don't fit the next one. |

I guess only you will know the answer to this as it'll very much depend on what winter looks like around where you drive. I live in Edinburgh and used to drive to Perth to work. Not had any winter tyres for the past 12 years and never been stuck. There's always a first time to get stuck but I genuinely don't see a need given my driving circumstances.

I was delivered run-flats with my car, and I'm not sure why but the service guys asked this and then implied I therefore need run-flats for the winter too. Which got put on yesterday by the way, just in time for another cold season probably. And I only bought a V8 to help promote global warming, what's happening to that then?

I had winters on my F10 but non run flat and they did come in handy and were great for stopping in the wet and cold conditions.
I now have a set for my G30 but i have run flats now and as others have said. Peace of mind if you do get a puncture you can stop in a safe place or at least get to your destination before dealing with it. I have pics and specs on my post i also went down from my summer 19s to 18s . So bought rims and tyres They did come in handy in the recent weather we have had with snow and ice too http://g30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1440456

With all the snow and cold weather we had pre new year I'm curious on your thoughts now...

I running Dunlop 3D Runflats on my new G30 530d with 18inch 619 wheels. Superb in winter and very quite. I also have an old E39 530d with Hankook winter tyres - also extremely good tyres.

My staggered 19s with Pirelli's on seems to be pretty decent in the snow. There's some inevitable slippage on icy roads but the x Drive coupled with winters seems a great combo. Happy I went with both!

Had the misfortune to drive up the slightest of hills near my house equipped with standard tyres and no xdrive, in mild snow today. Needless to say, it was amusing for everyone watching apart for me
To make matters worst, my girlfriend started cheering me on saying you are almost there, keep going |

Many years ago I remember seeing a guy in a Mk2 Escort get up a snowy hill by having his mates jump out of the car and get in the (open) boot as he reversed up. Maybe point out there are ways she could help other than vocal support |
