Aftermarket intake options
Was wondering what options are out there for aftermarket intakes and if anyone has experience with the ones listed below. It seems like the BMS one is pretty popular, but haven't seen anyone mention the AEM.

Only a panel filter from K & N for the diesels, with a kit for the petrol version https://www.knfilters.co.uk/search/a...0i&engine=2.0L

Any intakes for a F series MINI Cooper S will bolt right on to the F48 or F39 with the B46 engine.

I wouldn't rule the heat shield out entirely, I think it may be worth it. inherently in allows the engine to intake the coldest possibly air, which should increase performance a bit more than a hot air intake.
It would be nice to see side by side dyno comparisons for heat shield vs BMS intakes. |

The BMS retains the lower portion of the intake box, thus acting like a "heat shield". Essentially, this style intake (short ram) is a hot air intake. This mod is solely for noise. And that in itself is worth it IMO. If the heat shield justifies the almost double price tag for you than go for it!

Y’all are lucky to have options. The x2 m35i has a unique filter so I just sit here and wait.
How is the dry filter doing? |

I got the K&N air intake system recently and running it with the Dinan Sport set at Race Mode (+3PSI). The sound is a lot more noticeable, the engine idles better, and it runs smoother with a bit more power at higher end. But compared to the panel K&N panel filter I was running before, felt like there’s some loss of power at the lower end. (Might be because with the OEM intake box, the air is funnel through the enclosed box instead of the open air setup of the pod filter.) ECU is reset after each swap.
To be honest, I don’t really enjoy the sound of this engine and the turbo. I’d probably go for the AEM setup for a quieter, enclosed setup if I were to choose again. |

Just to make sure everything runs smoothly as it adapts to the new setup. I just use step on the gas pedal method with engine off, power on. This is just based on my experience with the chip and intake changes I had in the past. Seems like the computers learns slightly differently each time. Sometime the engine idles more roughly overtime, sometime doesn’t. Other factor like octane level seems to affect this too. I just reset it if I don’t like what the engine is doing.

Bought a BMW Performance intake for my E90 some years back. It shipped with a K&N oiled filter. Not saying better or worse than dry. Simply saying that BMW was shipping it from the factory for their performance intake at the time. For me at least, that ended any concern about oil film mucking up sensors and the like. Just sold the car last week at 133K miles. No issues related to the intake over the 14 years I had the car. Replaced the filter a few times with another K&N (too lazy to clean so just bought a new one).

AEM and K&N posted the Torque and HP graphs without a tune. But the gain you get in combination of a chip or tune is very noticeable especially with less back pressure.
