My beloved X2 vs a huge hailstorm :(

A massive hailstorm went through Canberra on Monday...and it was my first day back at work so my little X2 was fully exposed to nature's fury!

The hail was actually golf-ball sized and plentiful.

Car dented on every panel, except the tailgate and nosecone which are plastic. Even the badges were knocked off.

Still waiting 2 days later for it to be towed for insurance assessment...

Ouch! I'm so glad I live in an area not subject to big hailstones.

Living through you with my biggest nightmare and it not being a dream. So sad. The dentless PDR guys I talk to show me before and after pictures and it is amazing what results they show like it never happened. Good luck.

I'm sorry for this happening to you. Nobody likes their baby getting hurt. I will say that I'm really impressed how the glass held up. The interior could've gotten affected which would've exacerbated the problem. I have no doubt the car will be better than ever when repaired by the shop.

I did chuckle when you said it knocked the badge off.. beat the bmw out of it literally.. Agreed I'm surprised the glass held up so well. The time my car got totaled all of the glass including the sunroof broke, and it ended up destroying the interior too..

Thanks guys.. I too was surprised that the windscreen held up. I didn't get the sunroof on mine.

A lot of other cars closeby lost either their front or rear glass (or both)..

Maybe the whole body should be made of the same ABS plastic that the tailgate and nosecone are made from

It's finally been towed away for assessment. But that could take ages given that 10,000 cars have been damaged this week.

It happened so fast I couldn't leave my office to get to the car in time to move it. It was sunny, then the hail happened literally within 3 minutes, lasted about 5 minutes, then stopped. Not even much follow-up rainfall.

This place is bizarre. Bushfires all summer, then suddenly this hailstorm, followed by bushfires the next day

So an update on this... My insurance company agreed to replace my car with a brand new identical one! Downside is that mine is a factory order (not stocked in Australia), so I'd have to wait 4 to 5 months!

I'm taking their cash settlement instead and will look for something more quickly available. Or fall back and re-order the identical X2, but with sunroof this time

A used X3 M40i is looking tempting...but would require a bagload of extra $$

So it looks like I have decided to pay the extra for a 2019 BMW X3 m40i, in Sophisto Grey with black interior.

I'm still missing the X2 as I haven't had it for 5 weeks now and barely got to really know it in the 8 months since I picked it up.

But anyway, hopefully will enjoy the X3...

I drove an X3 M40 as a loaner for a couple of days when I had a passenger restraint sensor in the seat replaced. The car was a beast. the M35 is quick, the M40 is fast. Great car, you will enjoy it. It is a little big for me (wife drives a CRV) however in a couple years if she goes for her tiny electric tree hugger car the X3 will be on the list. Sorry you lost your X2, but you will really like the X3

That's a nice upgrade from the X2! It is a bunch bigger than the X2, but for me I've always driven larger cars so the X2 is just a little toy car to me in size haha.

Thanks guys. It's definitely larger than the X2 but seems nice and 'cruisy'...and perhaps most importantly has the 'WAF' (wife Acceptance Factor!)

If it wasn't for the 4 month ordering time for a brand new X2 with the options I want, I would probably have got the X2 again (and saved some $$)

Been great being on this forum, and thanks for the help and advice from people all over the world!

Take care and enjoy your X2s...or might see some of you across on the X3 sister forum...where I've already been asking 100s of questions
