X1s in the snow - summer tyres vs. winter tyres

Just watched this interesting video comparing two X1s; one 2-wheel drive sDrive with winter tyres and a 4-wheel drive xDrive with summer tyres. I won't spoil the results, but it's an interesting watch

I hope you aren't concluding 2WD is preferable to AWD based on that video. An AWD with the same tires as the 2WD would have outperformed the 2WD in acceleration and handling. They would have been similar in braking.

The problem is that I want a petrol version and they don't make AWD versions of that anymore :-(

My X1 is the first car to have 4x4, in the shocking snow last year, on 18's summer tyres. It was faultless, granted it won't brake as well as winter tyres, but moving, control and not slipping, it worked very.

That impressed, all cars will now be 4x4.

I was lucky ,managed to get a used (2100 miles 2 month old) 20i XDrive xLine in July after they removed it from list.

I'm happy with my FWD X1 and fitted my new set of winter wheels and tyres just last weekend, in time to catch the drop in UK temperatures. The new set are 205/60x17 93H Pirelli Sottozero3 on BMW rims (supplied complete at a very attractive price early spring, shortly after buying the car). Had a set of winter wheels and Dunlop WinterSport3 tyres on my previous FWD Audi Q3 through all the harsh UK weather last winter and never missed a beat, including quite a lot of driving around the Peak District close to where we live. Personally, I can't see the need for AWD, with or without winter wheels. Prior to using winter wheels I had pair of Autosocks in the boot/trunk and used them to easily get out of difficulty in sudden heavy snow on Boxing Day 2016, when other cars were failing to climb the hills that I sailed up. So, that's another useful emergency product if you don't want to go the whole hog of wheels/tyres. Just search 'Autosock' and watch the video on the makers website.

I love my 4WD BMW X1 with Perelli PZero tires. I just drove for a couple days in the blizzard with little issues as long as you are an experienced winter driver. The best part is turning the car into sports mode and turning the traction control in dynamic mode. It can drift quite well with good control. But don't do that on high traffic roads off course.

All I have a set of BMW winter wheelswith Pirelli winter tyres. Sadly I can’t seem to upload photographs from my iPad to show you the sort of conditions I was driving in last February in Switzerland. Suffice it to say we felt very much safer and the car was incredibly sure footed where other cars were struggling. The winter wheels will go back on in January ready for our next trip to the Alps.

100 % Agree, awesome in the snow. I am on 17's with Michelin X-Ice. Great setup.

Not surprised by the results in the video. Although I thought it was kinda silly comparing braking distance — as if 4wd cars had a different braking system.

I am also pleased to read here that ppl from the UK actually acknowledge the benefits of winter tyres. Because literally all British friends I have or others I have spoken to (granted, not car people) are convinced that winter tyres must be a capitalist conspiracy.

Lastly, we went skiing this February in France and to get to the chalet we needed to go up on a very steep, snowy hill. My X1 with 4wd and winter tyres made it easily, as if in summer. Friends golf with 2wd and also winter tyres couldn’t do it, also with ESP off. So sometimes — albeit very rarely — 4wd does help a lot.

Regarding 4wd systems, this test is kind of interesting.
Especially because Tiguan and the X1 have the same 4wd system. But in reality X1 performs better.

Proper winter tires fitted to the X1 X-drive is just too much fun!

They will start making petrol xdrives again from mid-2019. However, if you live in the UK, I don't think you need it.

I live in a snowy area tho, and visit the mountains regularly, so 4x4 was a must for me. Since I didn't want to wait half a year, I got the diesel xDrive, plus I don't really mind diesels.

I have X drive on my 2 litre petrol BMW. And even in the UK it’s worth thatextra sure footedness. It drives as though it’s on rails and my wife has managed to terrify me on some bends.
And last March with the “beast from the east” it certainly earned its keep. Ironically we are in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland and it’s 10 degrees Celsius. The worry is this is not ideal operating temperatures for winter tyres.

Dealer told me that if I wanted xDrive20i I need to wait till mid-2019. They took them off-market since the engines aren't meeting some gasoline particulate filters requirements in the EU. I can't find articles on it, tho.

Joris - are you sure that the dealers are not being pushed to meet their quota of less wanted diesel engined X1? Look at the VW Tiguan awd or even the MB GLC and tell the dealer they might be losing a sale.

That's possible, although I live in Bulgaria, and here diesels are still welcomed. To be honest, if it wasn't for the anti-diesel craze, I would prefer the 20d over the 20i any day.
