Engine tuning for the petrol X2?
Just thought I'd start a thread for anyone interested in squeezing a little more power out of the petrol X2 engines...
I haven't even got my car yet and I'm already thinking about it needing more power/responsiveness Has anyone chipped theirs yet? Remembering that downunder, like I think Europe and Asia, only gets the 141kW/198bhp petrol engine, not the 228bhp version like the North American version 141kW is a rather weak output in this day and age. I remember my Nissan turbo (stock, in 1994!) had 147kW and even then that was considered unstressed... And that didn't have direct injection. Even the Golf GTI of 2008 had 147kW. Other questions to explore: - Are there physical differences between the lower power and higher power 2 litre petrol engines? e.g. turbo, injectors, fuel pump, etc? - Would the 7-speed DCT transmission handle extra power/torque? cheers

I spoke with a local shop here in Canada and they said they can get the 230HP/260 Torque to 300+HP/3?? Torque on just a ECU tune and BMS Intake. I'm currently waiting for spring before doing the tune. For now I drive in sport/manual mode exclusively since comfort/eco make driving the car so bland.
I know there were a few people on here that have the BMS JB+ installed and found a great improvement over stock. |

Hey, I am actually been looking for some reference about tuning the F39.
However, there is still low number of tuning companies that I could find. So far, I found Burger Motorsport, TuningBox and DTE Systems. Im still waiting until there are more people and data before I jump in. |

I contacted MHD, who do great app-based tuning for many BMW engines, including my previous N54, but they said they haven't planned anything yet for the B48 engines (2 litre petrol)
It would be great if we could at least get the Australian versions up to 228bhp. Hopefully the 7 speed DCT tx can handle the extra torque..

I just got JB4 and ER downpipes on mine. Running map 2 right now and everything seems fine so far. You will notice a night and day difference from stock. I came from a fully bolt on M235i so even after the mods, it's still no way comparable. But it's quick enough now to make lane changes without endangering yourself.

different head gasket thicknesses?
Hi
doing more research on the X2 petrol engines... On realoem I noticed that there was a 0.7mm thick and a 1mm thick head gasket option for the X2 petrol engine (I think the B42 engine?) But I couldn't determine which power output related to which thickness gasket. This all seems rather jumbled up, but what I'm trying to determine is if I can get a HP increase through a tune, or do I need to also change head gasket (thicker= lower compression ratio)? I'd be happy with the 228hp like the US and Canadian petrol version gets. I believe that's the only market that gets that power output.

I made enquiries online with Dahler Tuning. They were very responsive and provided detailed info about their X2 engine tuning (I only enquired about petrol 2.0i engine):
"Concerning our additional control unit (includes wiring) and how it works I will try to explain. The desired engine performance upgrade is achieved by changing the boost pressure (sensors before and after throttle), injection duration (fuel pressure sensor), air-flow (air-flow meter sensor), and camshaft sensor, the same way the system was originally designed to operate. This also allows precise boost and fuel control throughout the full rpm range of the engine. So, what is the benefit of all this Intelligent Technology for your vehicle? - tested & sold worldwide - operating in all climates & conditions - robust constriction, dust, moisture and vibration resistant - no interference to existing vehicle parts - service intervals or BMW updates remain unchanged. - quality European engineering and components - easy installation - 3-year warranty - Swiss precision, Swiss innovation Our module gives an additional 18% increase (approx.) in power and torque, giving you greater towing power and making overtaking effortless and safer. Our module also does not interfere with the BMW DIS machine, which makes it invisible for BMW, keep our fingers crossed so far no engine trouble, making our module the best choice for your engine".

Burgertuning also provided some info on engine tuning options for the X2 petrol, but I think their response is based on US market (228bhp engine):
"We have 2 tuners that will be compatible for you car. We have the JB+, which will give you a quick 3-4psi with no hassle installation and you do not have to worry about settings. http://www.burgertuning.com/B48_B58_...all_tuner.html We also have the JB4, which can give you power gains up to 40whp (50hp crack) on a completely stock car on pump gas. http://www.burgertuning.com/B58_JB4_...nce_tuner.html The JB4 Features a plug and play installation and have features like in dash map switching between factory and various performance maps, optional in dash gauge displays for boost, boost limiting by gear for improved traction in lower gears, progressive water/methanol support, built in data logging, built in code reading, optional direct EWG control to prevent throttle closure with exhaust modifications, exhaust flapper control, and much more".

Has anyone come across boost pressures for stock? I was playing around with the obd tool and saw 13.2 at about half throttle and rpm in the 35i.
I don’t have a phone mount so I couldn’t let er rip and be able to see it. |
