480 miles is about 36mpg.
You need to brim it till the first click of the pump, reset the trip meter and then write down the miles you have covered when you next fill up and the amount of fuel to the first click again. Our pre ED 120d only did 33mpg but that was an auto. The 320d ED auto only did 38mpg everyday, only 35 until it hit 12k miles or so, and that was with V Power, with regular diesel you could knock 2mpg off at least. There is very little between different size diesel engines if you drive it in any other way than for economy. A 320d sat at 70mph will see excellent figures, around 48mpg, do 80mph and that will be 44mpg, do 85 and you are down to 40mpg, 90mph and you will be at 38mpg. Round town or any sub 10 miles journey and diesel is not the best at all. You have to be veru strict to drive a diesel and see really good consumption figures. I used to put £78 worth of V Power in mine and get about 480 miles from a tank, I can put £67 in my E320 3.2 litre V6 auto 7 seater, heavy as fuck, Mercedes estate and I get 400 miles from it. Only reason I would buy a diesel these days is because residuals are better, but then I am looking at newer Merc estates and I will pay £20k for an E320cdi sport or £14k for the E320 V6 petrol sport, the former will do 32mpg the latter 28mpg, so still no reason to buy the diesel really. So unless buying new it just isn't worth it imho. |

I must have a magic 320d 163bhp touring.
I use Millers additive or BP Ultimate Diesel either of which add 2-3mpg. Winter I typically get 43-44mpg, summer 46-48mpg. On a long run at say 70mph 48-52mpg. If I do an indicated 85mph I can still see around 47mpg. Driven around town in winter it can get down to 37-38mpg. I usually drive with economy in mind mostly but do "let it rip" for some fun at least once a day for a few minutes, which seems to make no measurable difference to MPG. One of the things in my favour is I live in a semi-rural area where the engine gets to warm up on a dual carriageway at 70mpg or a country road at 50mph. On a half hour commute to work it makes a difference of a good 3-5mpg compared to a return journey that starts in town traffic. |

Oh dear. OBC hopelessly inaccurate.
600 miles mainly motorway, OBC 51.3mpg, real 48.9 500 miles mainly A road/town OBC 49.6mpg, real 42.8 Average MPG over first 1100 OBC, 50.4mpg, real 46.0 Real is measured from brimfull to brimfull on 2 fills I thought my 50mpg was too good to be true! Anyway, its more like what I was expecting now.

I have a 2006 E91 320d and get 35-37mpg average. My driving is mostly around town, stop-start commuter runs over short distances with a cold engine.
It is only on longer runs at motorway speeds that I see maybe 43mpg. Country roads at 40-60mpg make a big difference. Getting into 4th gear as soon as possible will help mpg. I previously had a 2003 Audi A4 Avant 1.8T (163bhp, fwd) and this regularly saw 29-31 mpg in same town conditions. So its the same story, diesel good for long runs, petrol better for towns. Has anyone tuned their car and found that this improved mpg? DeeMac |

It's got alot colder, takes about 8 miles to get to temp, up until that point you could be using up to 40% more fuel.
I constantly used to get 32mpg from the 120d around town and on short (sub 15 mile) journeys when the temp dropped to 6ºc and lower. |

I have a 320d (177) and I average 44mpgs with all sorts of driving; a roads, b road blast, commuter runs (0-10mph crawl), etc etc.
Owned the car for 2 months and can't get it lower than 43mpgs even if I have a blast all the way home on the back roads. To get in the low 30s I'd say something wasn't right!
